This destructive pest is directly undermining both crop yields and overall produce quality. Without timely intervention and strict pest control measures, farmers risk suffering substantial financial losses.
How the pest damages okra yields
According to agricultural experts, female fruit borer moths lay their eggs on tender leaves and young pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore holes into the soft okra pods and crawl inside. Once inside, they feed on the internal tissues, rendering the fruit entirely unusable. Key indicators of this infestation include small visible holes on the pods, deformed fruit shapes, and internal rotting. In many cases, affected okra pods appear completely normal from the outside, only to reveal internal decay upon slicing, which causes market prices and product quality to plummet.
Immediate removal of infected pods
To combat this threat, the agriculture department has strongly advised farmers to maintain regular field surveillance and inspect their plants thoroughly. Officials recommend that any pierced or pest-damaged pods spotted in the field should be plucked immediately, carried far away from the cultivation area, and buried deeply in a pit to destroy them completely. Eliminating infected pods during the early stages halts the breeding cycle of the pest and stops the infestation from spreading further across the crop.
Precautions for chemical spraying
Experts emphasize that pest management should rely strictly on recommended insecticides applied in precise quantities prescribed by the agriculture department. Farmers must pay close attention to proper dosage, water dilution ratios, and the correct time intervals between sprays. Overusing chemical treatments without guidance from agricultural advisors can harm the crop, degrade the soil, and damage the local environment.
