However, during the monsoon season, various crop diseases frequently attack the fields, severely impacting overall yields and causing heavy financial losses. Among these threats, Poka Boeng stands out as a primary fungal infection that halts the growth of the crop while simultaneously triggering internal rotting and decay. This report outlines the distinct symptoms of this affliction and details the necessary preventive measures farmers can take.
Which Sugarcane Variety Is Most Vulnerable
Understanding which specific strain of sugarcane is most susceptible to this affliction is essential. The disease spreads at an exceptionally rapid pace within the widely grown 0238 variety. Once this particular variety is planted in a field and contracts the infection, the fungus leaves behind spores directly in the soil. Consequently, the symptoms reliably reappear in crops cultivated in the same plots year after year, posing an ongoing challenge for growers.
Key Symptoms of Poka Boeng
The initial signs of this condition begin to manifest from the ground level upward, but as the rainy season sets in and humidity levels rise, the symptoms become prominently visible at the crown of the plant. This fungal attack inflicts multiple adverse effects on the sugarcane, including rotting, stem decay, stunted growth, and an inability of the stalks to absorb vital nutrients properly. According to agricultural specialists, identifying these warning signs promptly is critical to preventing widespread crop failure.
Root Causes of the Fungal Outbreak
Agricultural expert Dr. I.K. Kushwaha noted that rotting issues of this nature were virtually unheard of in the region before the introduction of the 0238 sugarcane variety. The Poka Boeng disease predominantly displays its aggressive nature when the atmosphere remains humid and intermittent showers occur during the monsoon season. Rainwater accumulates within the whorl of the sugarcane plant during this period, creating an ideal microclimate for the fungus to establish itself and proliferate.
This specific fungus is known as Fusarium. It typically enters a field through infected seed material or diseased planting stock, though contaminated soil can also serve as the primary entry point. The physical manifestations of the disease include twisted leaves, halted plant development, an underdeveloped top canopy, and progressive rotting of the core tissues.
Recommended Sprays and Preventive Measures
This fungal condition is observed more frequently in fields suffering from a pronounced copper deficiency. Upon noticing these symptoms, farmers should immediately apply corrective treatments to the soil. Growers should mix 250 to 300 grams per bigha of copper sulfate, commonly referred to as blue vitriol, along with 1 kilogram of zinc sulfate and ferrous sulfate. These components should be finely pulverized, blended with sand or dry soil, and broadcast across the sugarcane fields during the rainy period to effectively curb the disease.
This agricultural practice also helps restore a deep green coloration to the foliage. Furthermore, farmers can prepare a liquid spray by combining copper oxychloride and a sticker at a concentration of 2 grams per liter of water for application over the crop. Administering a second spray at an interval of 7 to 10 days successfully arrests the progression of the disease and safeguards the harvest.
