Fixed deposit customers of State Bank of India can now acquire a secured credit card through a streamlined digital route. SBI Card has officially introduced the Advantage SBI Card on the lender's YONO platform, allowing individuals with term deposits to leverage their savings as collateral. The entire onboarding journey has been made 100% paperless, enabling eligible users to complete the application process directly within an estimated 10 minutes.
Four Card Variants Offered on the Platform
Under this launch, four secured Advantage SBI Card options have been integrated into YONO. Eligible applicants can choose between SBI Card Elite, SBI Card Prime, SimplyClick SBI Card, and SimplySAVE SBI Card depending on their lifestyle, retail preferences, and reward requirements. The product is exclusively available to customers maintaining an active fixed deposit with SBI, where the underlying term deposit serves as collateral against the extended credit facility.
Streamlined and Paperless Digital Journey
The facility was inaugurated by SBI Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty. Commenting on the digital rollout, he stated, "customers can now access a secured credit card through a simpler and more convenient journey, with the whole process designed to be quick and hassle-free." Because the underlying deposit covers potential non-payment risks for the lender, onboarding becomes swift and straightforward compared to standard unsecured credit assessment workflows.
Credit Profile Building for First-Time Borrowers
Secured cards serve as a fundamental stepping stone for individuals who are entirely new to credit borrowing or lack an established credit score. Furthermore, consumers seeking to rebuild an impaired credit history frequently use fixed deposit backed cards to display consistent repayment behavior over time. The presence of the deposit provides financial assurance to the card issuer while providing the cardholder with standard revolving credit functionality.
Crucial Terms and Fee Disclosures Awaited
Despite the official rollout, several key product specifics have not yet been formally revealed by SBI Card. The minimum fixed deposit threshold required to qualify for these cards, alongside the applicable joining fees and recurring annual charges, remains unannounced. Furthermore, key variables such as the exact credit limit granted as a percentage of the deposit value, interest rates on outstanding rolling balances, and the procedure for releasing the bank's lien on the fixed deposit have not been made public. Applicants are advised to review these figures within YONO or on the card issuer's portal once live updates are reflected.
Strategic Timing Ahead of the Festive Quarter
The introduction of this secured card facility coincides with the start of India's major festive shopping window. With Dussehra arriving next month followed shortly by Diwali, retail spending typically climbs sharply across categories including consumer electronics, apparel, and domestic goods. Providing a quick, collateralized credit channel allows depositors to access card benefits and finance seasonal expenditures directly from their existing banking relationships.
