Jharkhand's Pradan NGO Wants Farmers to Turn Five Decimals of Land Into a Solar Powered, Debt Free Business

Ranchi based NGO Pradan has created a solar powered, zero electricity bill business model for farmers that can be set up on just 5 decimals of land, complete with training and marketing support.

An NGO called Pradan, working out of Ranchi in Jharkhand, has designed a business model that lets a farmer build an entire agri-business on just 5 decimals of land, and the standout feature is that the whole setup runs without ever paying a rupee in electricity bills. Kuldeep, a representative of the organisation, explains that the model is meant to help farmers move beyond farming and become entrepreneurs.

Several units packed onto a tiny plot

According to Kuldeep, this model allows multiple activities to be started together within just 5 decimals of land. It includes a polyhouse and an advanced nursery, where saplings of high value crops and plants will be raised. There is also a vermi compost and earthworm compost unit that produces high quality fertiliser for organic farming. The same premises will also house cow dung manure and organic medicine production, aimed at protecting crops from disease using entirely natural methods. A farmer service centre and a small office will also be built on the plot, from where the entire business will be run.

Supply chain from local farmers to big agri firms

Produce made under this model will not stay limited to nearby farmers alone, it can also be supplied to large agriculture companies. Kuldeep says several progressive farmers have already implemented this model on their land and are now earning lakhs of rupees every year. Farmers can use the setup to prepare nutritious fodder for animals, organic medicines and high quality compost. By packaging these products well and giving them a branded look, farmers can sell them at better prices in the market, multiplying their profits.

Initial investment and zero electricity bills through solar panels

To put this business model into practice, a farmer needs to own the land and arrange an initial investment of at least 5 to 10 lakh rupees. The biggest strength of this model is that it is completely self-reliant. Solar panels will be installed on the roof of the office built on the premises, and the solar energy generated from them will meet all the electricity needs of the entire centre. This means the cost of drawing power from the grid comes down to zero.

Training, marketing support and government backing

Farmers who adopt this model will not be left on their own, they will get support from the government and the NGO at every stage. They will first be given full scientific training in making vermi compost, organic medicines and bio medicines. After that, the government will help make markets available for selling the finished products. Farmers will also be given free stalls at government fairs and exhibitions to showcase their produce. On top of that, they will get opportunities to travel to other states to learn new techniques and upgrade their skills.

How to get in touch

If you are a farmer with enough land and budget who wants to adopt this model, you can contact Pradan's official mobile number, 9431903149, for more information and guidance.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Farmers anywhere can use this model to start an additional agri-business on just 5 decimals of land and cut their electricity costs to zero using solar panels.
  • In Jharkhand: Farmers connecting with Ranchi based NGO Pradan will get direct support such as training, marketing help and free stalls at government fairs.

Inspiration & Lessons

  • Branding and packaging lift profits: Progressive farmers are packaging their products well and selling at better prices.
  • Making full use of government training and support: Farmers are growing their business using free training, marketing help and stalls at government fairs.
