Wholesale price pressures across the domestic economy intensified sharply at the end of the second quarter, raising widespread concerns for businesses and households alike. Official economic data reveals that the wholesale inflation rate climbed to 11.39% in September 2026, marking a notable jump from the 9.92% recorded in August 2026. A broad-based price surge across essential foodstuffs, industrial energy, and manufactured goods propelled the headline index higher. Simultaneously, consumer-facing retail inflation witnessed an upward momentum, compelling market participants and enterprises to track input costs with heightened vigilance.
Accelerating Pressures in Food and Daily Essentials
The food index within wholesale measurements recorded an inflation rate of 8.66% in September, advancing from 7.05% in August. This upward trajectory underscores accumulating price strains in agricultural produce and grocery staples. While price revisions in wholesale mandis do not always transmit immediately or uniformly to retail shelves, sustained wholesale increases inevitably threaten household budgets and elevate everyday grocery spending across regions.
Fuel and Power Segment Crosses 25% Mark
The energy basket remained the primary driver behind the wholesale surge. Wholesale inflation in the fuel and power segment surged to 25.85% in September, widening from 22.93% in August. Heavy price gains across mineral oils, crude petroleum, natural gas, coal, and lignite powered this acceleration. High energy tariffs directly translated into steeper electricity costs for factories and costlier freight movement nationwide.
Industrial Input Costs Drive Manufacturing Higher
Factory-gate inflation for manufactured products registered 9.76% during September, expanding from 8.37% reported in August. Rising prices for basic metals, industrial chemicals, textiles, rubber and plastic articles, alongside electrical equipment, played a decisive role in pulling this gauge upward. As intermediate raw materials grew more expensive, factory managers faced steeper operating expenses across diverse fabrication lines.
Geopolitical Conflicts and Supply Route Strains
Global supply disruptions played a pivotal role in compounding domestic wholesale inflation. The ongoing war in West Asia, coupled with severe shipping constraints around the Strait of Hormuz, pushed up worldwide prices for crude oil and agricultural fertilizers. India felt the immediate shockwaves of these external disruptions through elevated import costs for fuel, farming inputs, and essential raw commodities.
Retail Trajectory and Central Bank Monetary Actions
Echoing the movement in wholesale figures, consumer retail inflation advanced to 5.54% in September from 4.83% in August. To preempt second-round inflationary impacts and anchor inflation expectations, the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of India raised the benchmark policy repo rate by 0.25 percentage points, establishing it at 5.50%.
Twelve-Month Trajectory of Wholesale Prices
In October 2025, wholesale inflation stood in deflationary territory at -1.21%, followed by -0.32% in November 2025. It crossed into positive territory in December 2025 at 0.83%, before accelerating to 1.81% in January 2026, 2.13% in February 2026, and 3.88% in March 2026. A sharp upward breakout occurred in April 2026 at 8.26%, which further progressed to 9.68% in May 2026, 9.87% in June 2026, 9.78% in July 2026, 9.92% in August 2026, and finally peaked at 11.39% in September 2026.
