Conventional writing instruments across retail shelves are manufactured almost entirely from non-biodegradable plastics that persist in landfills for decades. Addressing this overlooked ecological challenge, Delhi residents Saurabh Mehta and his wife Shivani Mehta launched an innovative enterprise dedicated to replacing throwaway plastic stationery. The entrepreneurial couple initiated their research in 2018-19 before officially incorporating their venture in 2021. The firm is now scheduled to commercially introduce its fully biodegradable paper pen on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day.
The Overlooked Accumulation of Disposable Pen Waste
Disposable stationery presents a continuous ecological burden that rarely receives serious scrutiny from regular consumers. A plastic pen manufactured seven decades ago likely still lingers intact in the natural environment today, contributing directly to the growing volume of persistent synthetic waste. In an ordinary writing pen, only about 5 percent of the total assembly accounts for actual utility, represented strictly by the metal nib and the internal writing ink. The remaining 95 percent of the pen, consisting of the external outer barrel and the inner refill chamber, is comprised entirely of disposable plastic. To eliminate this disproportionate 95 percent environmental footprint, the founders devised a functional alternative constructed primarily out of paper.
Four Years of Material Research to Replace Plastic Refills
Crafting the external structure out of rolled paper presented few mechanical hurdles, but replacing the internal ink tube proved exceptionally difficult. Standard liquid ink naturally saturates or deteriorates raw paper walls, creating continuous leakage risks that complicated initial prototypes. Overcoming this hurdle required approximately 4 years of dedicated technical experimentation. The founders developed a specialized fabrication method where paper refills are internally lined with vegetable oil. This plant-based oil layer functions as a physical barrier that prevents ink seepage entirely. As a result, the finished instrument delivers writing performance and tactile ergonomics identical to regular retail pens without suffering from any fluid leakage.
Seed Funding Deployment and Production Expansion Ambitions
Financial backing for early developmental hurdles arrived through public entrepreneurship initiatives. The startup secured an innovation grant of approximately 16 lakh rupees under the central government's Startup India Seed Fund Scheme. The founding team directed the entirety of this capital injection into rigorous product development and material refinement. While the initiative has operated primarily as a bootstrapped enterprise to this point, scaled commercial production will require additional institutional financing. The founders plan to raise fresh investment capital while encouraging established corporate stationery brands to collaborate, seeking to accelerate the broader adoption of biodegradable writing tools and sustainable paper pens across global supply chains.
