A unique and inspiring scene unfolded at the IIT Madras campus during the freshers welcoming ceremony for the new academic batch. Setting aside traditional administrative protocol such as ribbon cutting or formal speeches, Institute Director Professor V. Kamakoti arrived disguised as a new student. He wore the standard freshers kit T-shirt, a cap, and carried a backpack, blending seamlessly into the crowd of incoming joiners.
Discreet Arrival at the Auditorium Main Entrance
On the morning of the event, Professor Kamakoti entered through the main auditorium gate at approximately 8:15 AM. He was dressed in the exact attire and carried the same backpack distributed to new students just days earlier. Although he greeted a few associates at the entrance with a polite gesture, his casual appearance allowed him to pass completely unrecognized by those around him.
Sitting Unnoticed Among Students for 90 Minutes
Once inside the auditorium, the Director quietly found a seat among the crowd. Students sitting adjacent to him remained immersed in their conversations and songs, entirely unaware that the head of the institution was seated right beside them. Professor Kamakoti enjoyed the atmosphere incognito for about 90 minutes before a couple of students finally recognized his face, causing widespread astonishment in the hall.
Stage Interaction and Reflection on Student Life
When the audience realized his presence and invited him onto the stage, the auditorium erupted in applause. Taking the microphone, Professor Kamakoti lightheartedly remarked, "I am getting old now! Earlier when I pulled such pranks, no one caught me for a long time. This time I got caught in just an hour and a half." He shared that while he is no longer a BTech student, sitting among them allowed him to relive his academic days. He noted that while the authority of the Director's chair holds its own place, spending those 90 minutes among students was a truly special experience.
Academic Journey and Long Association with the Institute
Professor V. Kamakoti shares a long-standing academic relationship with IIT Madras as an alumnus. He earned both his MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the institute. In 2001, he joined the faculty at IIT Madras and subsequently assumed charge as Director in January 2022. Known for engaging initiatives that encourage student well-being, he maintains the philosophy that failure does not exist in life, framing it instead as the initial step toward learning.
National Responsibilities in Technology and Education
Beyond his institutional duties, Professor Kamakoti has contributed significantly to national policy frameworks. He previously served as Chairman of the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence constituted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Currently, he serves as a member of the High-Powered Task Force appointed to oversee major reform measures for national examinations conducted by the NTA.
