Federal investigators with the Central Bureau of Investigation made a significant breakthrough in the unravelling of the 6000 crore Mahadev betting scam by taking key suspect Abhishek Kumar into custody. Kumar was intercepted immediately after landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on a flight arriving from Dubai. Investigators maintain that he served as a central coordinator overseeing operations, collecting funds, and channelling illegal proceeds into real estate acquisitions located in Dubai.
Airport Interception and Transit Remand
During the security search conducted at the Hyderabad airport terminal, CBI sleuths recovered highly incriminating materials from Abhishek Kumar's possession. Official statements confirmed that the seized items establish prima facie proof of his active involvement in running the syndicate alongside prime accused masterminds Saurabh Chandrakar and Shubham Soni. Investigators initially produced the detainee before a local magistrate in Hyderabad, securing a three-day transit remand. Following this initial legal step, he was transported to Chhattisgarh, where a Raipur court remanded him into police custody for two days for detailed interrogation.
Transfer from State Police to Federal Agency
The jurisdiction over this massive financial scandal was transferred to the CBI after the Chhattisgarh government handed over 13 distinct FIRs previously registered across various police stations in the state. Upon taking over the probe, the federal agency expanded its scrutiny across multiple networks, ultimately filing 8 chargesheets against a total of 100 accused individuals. This roster of formal suspects features primary application promoters, betting panel controllers, illicit hawala brokers, and compromised government employees. Investigators are currently pursuing remaining absconders while advancing diplomatic and legal measures to extradite the core promoters from foreign territory to face domestic trial.
Sustained Operations Despite National Ban
The Government of India officially banned the Mahadev betting application in November 2023 under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Despite that prohibition, the underground syndicate continued offering services across India because its command headquarters were positioned in the United Arab Emirates. The platform circumvented domestic blocks by constantly deploying cloned websites and proxy digital links. Highlighting the scale of this covert infrastructure, Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi stated in April 2024 that the platform operated through an estimated 3200 distinct panels processing bets nationwide.
Operating Mechanics and Wagering Scope
The illicit operation relied on an organized system wherein prospective bettors were assigned dedicated contact numbers to deposit money and place wagers. The bets spanned live sports events, including cricket, badminton, football, and tennis, alongside digital card games like poker. Beyond standard wagers on marquee sporting events such as the Indian Premier League, the platform was also used to run illicit betting markets on the seat tallies and final outcomes of critical state elections across the country.
Scrutiny on Celebrities and Corporate Executives
Throughout 2023 and 2024, the investigation triggered widespread public scrutiny after numerous prominent Bollywood figures were linked to the promotional campaigns or wagering activities linked with the application. Celebrities including Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tamannaah Bhatia, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sanjay Dutt, rapper Badshah, and comedian Kapil Sharma were summoned and questioned by investigators. In parallel, corporate oversight deepened around EaseMyTrip co-founder Nishant Pitti, who was formally named as an accused in the ongoing case and recently served with a sixth summons to face agency inquiries.
