China now wants to leave behind the bitterness and grievances of recent years and make a fresh start with India. That signal came directly from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, seen as a close confidant of Xi Jinping, during his visit to Delhi. After arriving in the capital, Wang Yi first joined a BRICS meeting with NSA Ajit Doval and later met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following the meeting, he strongly advocated putting India-China relations back on track.

According to Wang Yi, as the world's two largest populations and fast-growing economies, both countries must now tear down the wall of mutual distrust and misunderstanding.

What Wang Yi Said After Meeting Modi

After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Wang Yi said China is ready to work with India to implement the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries. He stressed that both nations should strengthen mutual trust, clear up misunderstandings, handle sensitive issues with maturity, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and maintain the positive momentum in their relationship.

By doing so, he said, both countries can move faster toward their respective modernisation goals. During the meeting, Wang Yi also said China and India should set an example in promoting unity and self-reliance among the countries of the Global South.

Ambassador Shares Details on X

China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, shared details of the meeting on the social media platform X. He wrote that Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

According to the ambassador, Wang Yi said that China and India, being the world's two largest developing countries and important members of the Global South, can take a leading role in promoting unity and self-reliance among Global South nations. Wang Yi also said that as the chair of BRICS, China will continue to support India's responsibilities and work with India to strengthen BRICS cooperation.

Border Dispute Discussed in Meeting With Doval

The Chinese Foreign Minister also met NSA Ajit Doval on Monday during the BRICS National Security Advisers' meeting. In their talks, both sides reviewed the recent progress in bilateral relations and agreed that there is gradual movement toward normalising ties. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Ambassador Xu Feihong and several other officials were present at this meeting.

According to the statement issued by the ambassador on X, Wang Yi said that India and China are among the world's most populous economies, and therefore both countries should view their relationship not only through a bilateral lens but also from a long-term and global perspective. He said both countries should turn the consensus reached between their leaders into action, accelerate their development through cooperation, and speed up the modernisation process of the Global South.

In the meeting with Doval, Wang Yi backed India's role as the chair of BRICS and said China is ready to work with India for the development and expansion of the BRICS framework.

He further said that respecting each other's core interests is essential. Sensitive issues should be handled with maturity, and the India-China border dispute should be kept in a place where it does not affect the broader relationship between the two countries. He added that both sides should also work to build correct understanding across all sections of society, so that strong public support and a social foundation can be created to improve bilateral ties.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Any normalisation of India-China ties could translate into reduced tension along the border and an easing of trade frictions.
  • For ordinary readers: Greater trust between the two countries raises hopes of a smoother trade environment, which could eventually benefit consumers and businesses alike.
