South African opening batters Aiden Markram and Marcus Ackermann put on a batting masterclass against Australia in the ongoing third Test match, displaying exceptional grit and strokeplay. The pair put together a brilliant opening partnership yielding over 150 runs, leaving the Australian bowling attack desperate for a breakthrough. Even though Marcus Ackermann fell just 5 runs short of a well-deserved century, their magnificent effort successfully replicated a milestone achieved nearly 56 years ago in red-ball cricket.
The High-Stakes Test Series Between South Africa and Australia
The Australian cricket team is currently touring South Africa for a hard-fought three-match Test series. Two matches of the series have already been completed. Australia claimed victory in the opening fixture to secure an early lead, before South Africa mounted a strong comeback to win the second Test and level the series. The ongoing third match will ultimately decide the winner of the series. Because the series is part of the ICC World Test Championship, every session carries immense significance for both sides.
A Record-Breaking Opening Partnership for South Africa
Opting to bat first in the third and final match of the series, the South African team received a commanding start from openers Aiden Markram and Marcus Ackermann. The duo steadily pushed the team total past the 100-run mark before comfortably crossing 150 runs together. This marks the first time since 2017 that a South African pair has put on 150-plus runs for the first wicket in Test matches. Back in 2017, Aiden Markram had shared a 243-run stand with Dean Elgar during a match against Bangladesh. Furthermore, it has been roughly 56 years since South Africa last added more than 150 runs for the first wicket against Australia in Test cricket, with the previous such instance occurring back in 1970.
Ackermann Misses Out on Century as Markram Falls After Solid Knock
During the course of the innings, Marcus Ackermann was batting brilliantly on 95 when Nathan Lyon managed to dismiss him and send him back to the pavilion. Ackermann scored 95 runs from just 94 deliveries, batting with an aggressive ODI-style flair in the longest format of the game by hitting 12 boundaries and 2 sixes. At the time of his dismissal, the team score stood at 158 runs. Shortly after, Aiden Markram was also dismissed after contributing 78 runs. He faced 141 balls during his knock, striking 10 fours and a single six. Propelled by these efforts, South Africa has pushed past the 200-run mark and continues to eye a massive total, which could pose severe challenges for the Australian side.
