Chasing a target of over 400 runs in the fourth innings of a Test match remains one of the toughest challenges in cricket. Now, South Africa has a golden opportunity to rewrite the history books. Playing the first Test against Australia at the Kingsmead ground in Durban, the home side has been set a daunting target of 421 runs. By the end of the fourth day's play, South Africa reached 102 for the loss of four wickets in their second innings. The team requires another 319 runs on the final day to secure victory, with only 6 wickets remaining in hand.
Under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, South Africa has not lost a single Test match so far. Consequently, as they take the field on October 13, the team will face not only the challenge of taking a lead in the series against Australia but also the mounting pressure of maintaining their captain's impressive unbeaten record. Achieving this target, however, will demand an extraordinary performance from the batsmen on the final day.
West Indies Holds the Record for the Highest Run Chase
In the nearly 149-year history of Test cricket, no team has ever successfully chased down a target exceeding 420 runs in the fourth innings. If South Africa manages to score 421 runs and win the match, they will claim the world record for the highest successful run chase in Test history. This record is currently held by the West Indies. The Caribbean side successfully chased a target of 418 runs against Australia in St. John's in May 2003 to win by three wickets. South Africa currently occupies the second spot on this elite list, having successfully chased 414 runs against Australia losing just 4 wickets at the WACA ground in Perth in December 2008.
Overall in Test cricket history, a team has successfully chased a target of over 400 runs in the fourth innings only four times. India successfully pursued a target of 403 runs against the West Indies in Port of Spain in 1976. Similarly, Australia secured a victory by scoring 404 runs against England in Leeds back in 1948.
South Africa Must Surpass Its Own Previous Best
South Africa's highest successful run chase in Test cricket stands at 414 runs, which they achieved against Australia in Perth in 2008. This time around, the team must score 7 runs more than that previous landmark. However, the record for the highest successful run chase in Tests played on South African soil currently belongs to Australia. The Australian team successfully chased down a target of 336 runs against South Africa at Kingsmead in January 1950.
