Every time Vaibhav Suryavanshi walks out to bat for India, a new record seems to fall, from becoming the youngest international debutant to smashing fifties and centuries at a blistering pace that has left bowling attacks scrambling. Yet buried in Team India's T20 record books is one milestone that has now slipped permanently beyond his reach, no matter how long and how successful the rest of his career turns out to be.
Who holds the record
The record belongs to Ajinkya Rahane, who recently retired from international cricket after a long and celebrated run in Indian colours. What makes it particularly striking is that Rahane set this mark not in Tests or ODIs, the formats he built his reputation in, but in T20 cricket, the very format Suryavanshi is currently lighting up with his fearless strokeplay. Even so, Suryavanshi will never be able to catch up to this particular Rahane milestone over the rest of his career, however many records he ends up rewriting elsewhere.
The story behind Rahane's debut knock
Rahane's record is for the highest score by an Indian batter on T20 International debut. Playing his first T20 for India against England back in 2011, Rahane walked out under pressure and produced a brilliant 61 runs. In the fifteen years since that innings, no player who has made a T20 debut for India has managed to match, let alone beat, that debut score, despite the format producing plenty of explosive young batters in the years that followed.
How Suryavanshi's own T20 debut went
Suryavanshi made his own T20 International debut against England just last month, arriving with enormous expectations built on his earlier exploits. On that occasion, though, he was dismissed after scoring only 14 runs, well short of what would have been needed to challenge Rahane's mark. That is precisely why, even if the 15 year old goes on to claim records like the fastest fifty or the fastest century in T20 cricket during his career, the specific record for India's highest score on T20 debut is now permanently out of his reach.
Who ranks second on the list
Behind Rahane, the second highest score on T20 debut for India belongs to Ishan Kishan. Kishan scored 57 runs against England as well, in his own debut match back in 2021. Notably, both of the top two innings on this list came in debut matches played against England, in 2011 and 2021 respectively, and for now there is no room left for Suryavanshi's name to break into that exclusive list.
