In the second One Day International at Wellington, New Zealand experienced a batting collapse against a dominant Indian bowling attack, but middle-order batsman Daryl Mitchell managed to etch his name into the record books. The host side folded for just 134 runs, marking their lowest ODI total against India on home soil. Amid the tumble of wickets, Mitchell stood firm, grinding out a determined 55 runs from 104 deliveries. While his resistance could not guide the hosts to a competitive target, the knock was enough to eclipse a 27-year-old landmark.
Eclipsing Chris Cairns Historic Milestone
With this innings, Mitchell became the leading run-scorer for New Zealand against India in a single calendar year in ODI cricket. He surpassed former Kiwi all-rounder Chris Cairns, who had accumulated 403 runs across 10 innings in 11 matches against India back in 1999. In contrast, Mitchell took only five matches against India in 2026 to reach 435 runs. His heavy run scoring against the Indian attack began earlier in the year during the bilateral tour of India, where he notched remarkable scores of 84, 131 not out, and 137.
Top Kiwi Scorers Against India in a Calendar Year
Mitchell now leads an elite list of New Zealand batters against India. Behind him sits Cairns with 403 runs, followed by Kane Williamson in third position with 361 runs. Former stalwart Ross Taylor occupies fourth spot with 343 runs. Mitchell's persistent run-making highlights how comfortable he has been against the Indian bowlers throughout this calendar period, providing stability when the rest of the lineup has struggled.
Surpassing Kane Williamson for New Zealand Record
Beyond breaking the mark set by Cairns, Mitchell also overtook Kane Williamson for another prestigious milestone. He now holds the record for the most ODI runs scored by any New Zealand batsman against a single opponent in one calendar year. Williamson had held the previous record since 2015, when he compiled 411 runs across seven matches and seven innings against Sri Lanka. By pushing his tally to 435 runs against India, Mitchell now holds the top spot on that national list.
Indian Attack Dismantles Kiwi Lineup
The record-setting effort came during a thoroughly one-sided bowling display by India. Pacer Gurnoor Brar led the charge by claiming four wickets, consistently troubling the home batsmen. Support came from Aaqib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj, and Axar Patel, all of whom picked up two wickets apiece to bundle out New Zealand well inside their allocated overs.
