Amazon has rolled out a new way for users to interact with its artificial intelligence shopping assistant, Alexa for Shopping. Select customers can now send text messages to receive shopping assistance instead of relying solely on voice commands. This newly introduced feature enables shoppers to search for products, compare prices across different items, track ongoing deals, and complete purchases directly through text.
At present, this functionality is being rolled out to a limited group of customers in the United States via invitation. The company stated that availability will expand to a broader user base in the coming weeks. However, the corporation has not yet provided any details regarding when this feature might launch in international markets, including India.
From Product Discovery to Checkout via Messaging
Through this updated feature, shoppers can type out their specific requirements and message Alexa to inquire about various products. The assistant helps find multiple options and compares them, enabling customers to make well-informed buying decisions before making a payment. Furthermore, users can track promotional deals and monitor price fluctuations on specific items over time.
This capability minimizes the need for shoppers to repeatedly visit the Amazon platform to manually check product listings. Additionally, customers can instruct Alexa to finalize purchases on their behalf, meaning the assistant extends far beyond simple product discovery to actively assist throughout the entire purchasing journey.
Navigating Rising Competition in AI-Powered Retail
The introduction of this text-based tool arrives amid intensifying competition among technology companies developing AI assistants designed to facilitate online retail. Concurrently, Amazon has taken strict measures regarding the access of third-party AI agents to its marketplace. Recently, the company blocked Meta's AI shopping agent, Muse, from accessing its online store. According to reports, Amazon claimed that Muse accessed the store without proper authorization and appeared to be storing user login credentials.
Amazon is also involved in an ongoing legal dispute with Perplexity over its Comet shopping agent. The company secured a court order in March to block the agent, but a US appeals court overturned that injunction in August, and the legal battle remains active. By integrating text chat into Alexa for Shopping, Amazon continues to enhance its artificial intelligence shopping capabilities, providing consumers with alternative ways to discover and buy merchandise.
