Ahead of India's upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has strongly advocated for the inclusion of wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI. Dasgupta emphasized that subcontinent conditions in Sri Lanka naturally favor spin bowling, making Kuldeep an essential asset for the Indian bowling attack. The two-match red-ball series holds significant importance for India in the context of the World Test Championship standings.
Sri Lanka Test Series Schedule and Pitch Dynamics
The Test series between India and Sri Lanka is set to begin on August 14. The opening Test match will be played from August 14 to 18 at the Galle International Stadium, a venue renowned for providing substantial assistance to spin bowlers as the match progresses. Following the series opener, the second and final Test will take place from August 22 to 26 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. Both fixtures offer crucial points for India to solidify its position in the ongoing WTC cycle.
Deep Dasgupta's Analysis on Squad Composition
Analyzing the selected squad, Dasgupta noted that the selection committee has tailored the team according to local Sri Lankan conditions. He pointed out that the squad features fewer fast bowlers and a heavier reliance on spinners. Dasgupta highlighted that previous Test matches played in Sri Lanka have demonstrated scenarios where playing up to four spinners becomes a viable tactical decision. Therefore, including extra slow bowlers in the touring squad aligns expectedly with environmental demands.
Impact of Washington Sundar's Injury
Dasgupta also addressed the absence of Washington Sundar, noting that the all-rounder would have been the preferred front-runner spinner for the tour had he not suffered an injury. With Sundar sidelined, the team management selected alternative spin options. Nevertheless, Dasgupta remarked that the current squad contains all deserved candidates and no notable player was left out of the setup.
Tactical Setup and Kuldeep Yadav's Role
Discussing India's potential playing XI, the former cricketer stated that India should ideally field three specialist spinners in Sri Lanka. He maintained that Kuldeep Yadav ought to be a mandatory pick in the final lineup. Kuldeep is currently participating in the One-Day Cup in England, representing Yorkshire. This competitive game time in English county cricket ensures he remains match-fit ahead of the national assignment.
Kuldeep Yadav's Impressive Test Career Record
Since making his Test debut in 2017, Kuldeep Yadav has featured in only 18 Test matches for India due to team composition constraints. Despite limited appearances, his performance record remains exceptional. In his 18 Test outings, Kuldeep has picked up 79 wickets, including 5 five-wicket hauls in an inning. Having been omitted from the playing XI during the previous Test series against England, a move that raised questions regarding team management strategies, Kuldeep's wrist-spin capabilities in Sri Lankan conditions could prove to be India's primary match-winning factor.
