The opening fixture of the five-match T20 international series between India and the West Indies is scheduled to take place at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, but swelling floodwaters in the vicinity have raised concerns ahead of the clash. Floodwaters from the nearby Gomti river have inundated several areas surrounding the venue. Due to severe waterlogging, authorities have taken precautionary measures and closed an underpass that leads directly toward the stadium.
Management Assures On-Time Start Amid Drainage Operations
Despite the alarming accumulation of water along the perimeter roads, the Ekana Stadium management has provided assurances that the opening fixture will face no interruptions and will commence strictly as scheduled. Nevertheless, apprehension remains high among organizers and spectators because the flood line has reached uncomfortably close to the venue boundaries. Large parts of the surrounding neighborhood remain submerged, prompting administrative teams to deploy resources to expedite water drainage before match day.
Proximity to Gomti River and Infrastructure Concerns
The Ekana Cricket Stadium stands merely 500 meters away from the banks of the Gomti river. The issue has been compounded by a major drainage canal passing adjacent to the sports complex. Heavy discharge caused the drain to overflow and merge with the swollen river, rapidly escalating into localized flooding. Questions have emerged regarding municipal oversight and stormwater management, as inadequate drainage handling has pushed excess water into multiple residential and commercial pockets of Lucknow.
India Eye Momentum After 2-1 ODI Series Victory
Prior to this five-game T20 showdown, the two sides contested a three-match One Day International series, which the Indian squad clinched by a 2-1 margin. Entering the shortest format, the home side will be eager to maintain their competitive edge and kick off the campaign with another victory. Local interest in the encounter is exceptionally strong, with thousands of supporters expected to pack the stands to watch several frontline stars alongside 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi take the field.
