The Indian cricket team led by captain Shubman Gill has arrived in Sri Lanka to begin high-intensity preparations ahead of their upcoming two-match Test series. With the first Test match set to commence on August 15 in Galle, the squad is actively working to refine every aspect of their game. Before entering the high-stakes Test series, India will compete in a three-day warm-up match starting August 7 against a strong local selection. During the initial practice sessions, the Indian players have put in rigorous work on the ground, placing their primary operational focus on elevating team fielding and catching standards.
Fielding Drills Under New Coach Subhadeep Ghosh
Prior to the team's departure for Sri Lanka, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Subhadeep Ghosh as the new fielding coach for the men's national side, filling the position after former coach T Dilip completed his term. Throughout the practice session, Ghosh worked closely with squad members on specialized slip catching drills, high catch judgments, and rapid ground fielding reactions. The heavy emphasis on fielding stems directly from disappointing defensive efforts during recent series against Ireland and Zimbabwe, where Indian fielders dropped multiple crucial catches. Both the team management and leadership group had openly expressed frustration with those defensive lapses, leading to focused practice sessions to correct these flaws before facing Sri Lanka. Highlighting these preparations, BCCI released a practice video on X showing the squad going through intense catching drills.
Limited Prior Test Experience in Sri Lanka
India last toured Sri Lanka for a Test series in 2017, and the national squad has experienced a major generational transition over the intervening nine years. Among the players currently in Sri Lanka, only three squad members possess prior experience playing Test matches on Sri Lankan soil. Veteran batter KL Rahul, wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and seasoned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja are the sole remaining players from that 2017 series. The rest of the young squad will be making their first red-ball appearance in Sri Lankan conditions.
Realigned Pace Attack in Bumrah's Absence
With star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah sidelined from the tour due to an injury, the primary responsibility of spearheading India's seam attack rests with Mohammed Siraj. To support Siraj in the pace department, the selectors have included young seamers Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar. Additionally, spin bowlers Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain have been integrated into the team to add variety and depth to the bowling lineup on Sri Lankan pitches.
Sri Lanka Names Competitive Warm-Up Squad
Ahead of the three-day warm-up game starting August 7, Sri Lanka has announced a highly competitive squad featuring several players contending for spots in their main Test team. Sonal Dinusha, who has played 3 Test matches for Sri Lanka, will captain the warm-up side. The local squad features established international fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara, alongside spin bowling options Isitha Wijesundera and Ramesh Mendis, setting up a tough preparatory test for the visiting Indian side.
