Defending champions Jammu and Kashmir launched their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 campaign with an emphatic bowling performance against Madhya Pradesh at the Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar. Fast bowler Rohit Sharma marked his return to the red-ball state team after an absence of nearly two years by tearing through the opposition batting lineup. Thanks to his incisive spells, Madhya Pradesh were bowled out for a modest total of 196 on the opening day itself. Jammu and Kashmir, who scripted domestic cricket history earlier this year by clinching their maiden Ranji Trophy crown, showed that their championship form remains intact. The 32-year-old pacer led from the front, claiming 5 wickets for just 36 runs across 21.2 disciplined overs.
Early Breakthroughs Put Madhya Pradesh on the Back Foot
Having won the coin toss at Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir elected to field first to exploit the conditions. Rohit Sharma made immediate inroads with the new ball, picking up two quick wickets early on and pushing Madhya Pradesh onto the defensive. A recovery effort was subsequently mounted by Madhya Pradesh captain Shubham Sharma and Chanchal Rathore, who shared a resilient 65-run stand for the fourth wicket. Just as the partnership began to consolidate the visitors' innings, Rohit Sharma returned to strike, removing Chanchal Rathore and handing the initiative back to Jammu and Kashmir.
Captain Shubham Sharma Fights Back but Sunil Kumar Strikes
Even as partners departed at the other end, skipper Shubham Sharma stood firm. He joined hands with Aryan Pandey to construct another solid partnership of 51 runs, ensuring his side edged close to the 200-run mark. Shubham Sharma finished as the top scorer for Madhya Pradesh with a defiant knock of 79 runs. The resistance finally ceased when Rohit Sharma dismissed the opposition captain to wrap up the entire innings at 196. Supporting him admirably from the other end was left-arm seamer Sunil Kumar, who delivered an equally punishing spell to capture 4 wickets, while Auqib Nabi chipped in with 1 scalp.
Close of Play on Day 1 and Domestic Career Background
In reply, Jammu and Kashmir faced a brief and tricky phase before stumps, closing the opening day at 3 for the loss of 1 wicket. Opener Shubham Khajuria was sent packing for a 10-ball duck, leaving Kamran Iqbal and Vanshaj Sharma unbeaten at the crease when play concluded for the day. For Rohit Sharma, this performance represented his second career five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. Prior to this fixture, the seamer had featured in 22 first-class matches, picking up 39 wickets at an average of 34.66. His domestic career also includes 8 List-A games and 5 T20 fixtures, accounting for a combined total of 8 wickets across those white-ball competitions, though he is yet to take a wicket in the T20 format. Earlier this month, he was selected in the Jammu and Kashmir squad for the Irani Cup, but remained on the bench in a contest where Rest of India secured a 167-run victory.
