Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has long served as the backbone of the Indian cricket team's bowling attack, yet he has continued to struggle with his fitness ever on following back injuries. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India meticulously manages his workload to protect him, the grueling demands of the sport often prevent players from escaping physical ailments for extended periods. The very bowling action and precise yorkers that brought him immense success have also placed a heavy toll on his body. Consequently, ever since the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup final, he has appeared in only a handful of matches in this format.
Only 3 ODIs Played Across 970 Days
Since the end of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah has featured the least for Team India in the one-day format. The tournament final took place on November 19, 2023, while his most recent ODI appearance came against England on July 16, 2026. This means that across a span of 970 days, he managed to step onto the field for merely 3 ODI matches. During this period, the Indian team played a total of 29 ODIs, leaving the star yorker out of 26 fixtures. This stark gap raises pressing questions regarding whether such limited availability will allow Jasprit Bumrah to guide Team India toward victory in the 2027 World Cup, while also questioning why physical concerns persist despite careful management.
Diminished Presence in Test and T20 Formats
It is not just the 50-over format where Jasprit Bumrah has missed significant action, as injuries and workload preservation have kept him frequently sidelined from Test and T20 cricket as well. Evaluating his availability since 2023 reveals that he has represented Team India in only 22 matches in red-ball cricket, whereas the national side contested a total of 27 Tests during the same window. This translates to missing 5 Test matches due to enforced rests and recovery periods.
The shortest format of the game presents a similar picture of regular rest periods. Following the 2023 ODI World Cup, Team India participated in a total of 78 T20 matches, but Bumrah could only take part in 33 of them. This implies that he sat out 45 T20 fixtures either due to injury setbacks or systematic workload protocols.
Fitness Concerns Remaining a Headache for Team India
The recurring physical struggles of Jasprit Bumrah have created ongoing headaches not only for the player himself but also for the team management. Most recently, he encountered a knee injury during the ODI series on the tour of England. Although initial plans dictated his selection for the Test series on the Sri Lanka tour provided he cleared fitness assessments, he ultimately remained out of the squad despite passing his fitness tests. In his place, Aaqib Nabi from Jammu and Kashmir has been inducted into the team setup.
