England's experienced white-ball wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his left hamstring. The injury, sustained during an ODI match against Sri Lanka, has left no clear timeline for his return to competitive cricket. Because of this physical setback, Buttler is likely to miss England's upcoming limited-overs fixtures in Pakistan and the white-ball tour of Australia scheduled for November. Furthermore, the recovery process casts serious doubt on his participation in South Africa's prominent T20 franchise competition, the SA20 league.
The 36-year-old batter picked up the injury on September 24 while batting during the second ODI encounter against Sri Lanka at Headingley. Experiencing sharp pain, he initially had to retire hurt before courageously returning to the crease later in the innings. Following the incident, he was omitted from England's squad for the Pakistan tour, and his availability for the tour of Australia in November remains highly doubtful.
Hospital Update Shared Online
Taking to Instagram on Monday, Buttler posted a photograph from his hospital bed to update supporters about his medical procedure. The image showed a medical brace strapped firmly around his left leg. He accompanied the post with a message stating that the surgery was successful and he has officially begun his recovery journey, adding that he feels more motivated than ever. However, official medical assessments have not yet provided a definitive timeframe for his full recovery. He was originally slated to represent Durban Super Giants in the SA20 league starting on January 17, but his participation in the tournament is now heavily under threat.
Injury Halts Impressive Run of Form
This physical blow comes at a particularly frustrating time for Buttler, who had recently rediscovered his fluent form in limited-overs international cricket. Earlier in the year during the T20 World Cup hosted in India, his output fell short of expectations, as he managed a total of only 87 runs during England's run to the semi-finals. However, he rebounded strongly in subsequent outings, accumulating 466 runs across his next nine white-ball international appearances.
Milestones and Recurring Injury Concerns
During the very innings against Sri Lanka where he got injured, Buttler played a blistering knock of 69 runs from just 49 deliveries, striking five maximums. Prior to that, he led Manchester Super Giants to title glory in The Hundred while captaining the side. During that exact campaign, he achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first men's player in world cricket to score 15,000 runs in the T20 format. Despite these achievements, Buttler has struggled with recurring muscle injuries over the past few years, including previous calf issues and a similar left hamstring problem during the 2024 IPL season. The extended recovery required this time threatens to disrupt England's upcoming seasonal plans.
