Mounting political and administrative instability in Pakistan has cast a direct shadow over the country's domestic cricket calendar. Reacting to the deteriorating security environment in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally relocated several fixtures of the premier President's Trophy Grade-1 tournament away from Peshawar and Abbottabad. The administrative move followed immediately after the federal government declared a state of emergency and imposed governor's rule across the region.
Revised Schedule and New Match Venues
The ongoing season of the President's Trophy had been progressing across four distinct centres: Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and Abbottabad. Following the administrative shake-up in the province where both Peshawar and Abbottabad are situated, matches originally scheduled at Peshawar's Imran Khan Stadium and the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium had to be reassigned. However, tournament fixtures slated for Islamabad and Rawalpindi remain entirely unaffected and will continue as originally planned.
The sixth round of the competition was designated to get underway on October 12, but the relocated games will now commence on October 14 at alternative facilities. Under the revised arrangement, Ghani will take on Hyderabad Kingsmen Academy at the Rana Naved Academy situated in Sheikhupura. Concurrently, the contest featuring Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited and Oil and Gas Development Company Limited will take place at the LCCA Ground in Lahore, an arena positioned in close proximity to the iconic Gaddafi Stadium.
Knock-On Effects on the Final Stage
The adjustments enforced in round six have triggered subsequent schedule revisions for the concluding phase of the league stage. The final round of fixtures will now kick off on October 19, marking a 24-hour delay compared to the initial itinerary. As part of this final set of matches, Markhor IT Solutions will face Pakistan TV at Lahore's LCCA Ground. Meanwhile, the fixture pitting Hyderabad Kingsmen Academy against State Bank of Pakistan will be staged at the National Cricket Ground in Islamabad.
Setback for Peshawar's Cricket Revival
While Abbottabad Cricket Stadium has maintained a sustained track record of hosting first-class cricket over many years, the venue change represents a major setback for cricket infrastructure in Peshawar. It was only during the preceding season that senior men's domestic cricket staged a return to Imran Khan Stadium after an absence spanning roughly seven years, hosting nine games during that campaign's Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
The venue had undergone extensive modernization and structural renovations, with the board actively planning to stage high-profile competitive cricket there on a regular basis. In fact, Peshawar had earned hosting rights for Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches for the very first time this year. The sudden emergence of widespread regional unrest has once again derailed those aspirations, pulling elite sporting action away from local cricket enthusiasts.
