In a major setback for the Indian women's cricket team, talented opening batter Pratika Rawal has been ruled out of the highly anticipated historic Lord's Test match against England. Rawal, who was originally scheduled to open the batting alongside vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, suffered an injury that forced her out of this crucial red-ball encounter. Head coach Amol Muzumdar officially confirmed the development during a press conference, revealing that Delhi's experienced batter Priya Punia has been called up as Rawal's replacement for the one-off Test match, which is scheduled to commence on July 10. Playing at Lord's, often referred to as the 'Home of Cricket', is a ultimate dream for every cricketer, making Rawal's absence even more painful at this juncture.
Pratika Rawal's Ongoing Battle with Injuries
This sudden exclusion is another devastating blow for Pratika Rawal, who has experienced a highly challenging few months on the professional circuit. She previously faced a similar setback during the Women's ODI World Cup, where an untimely injury cut her tournament short and forced her to leave the squad mid-way. Demonstrating immense resilience, Rawal worked her way back into national contention and made a spectacular comeback during the Test match at the WACA. However, just as she was regaining her rhythm and establishing her spot in the top order, this fresh physical setback has derailed her progress once again. It represents a deeply frustrating phase for one of India's most promising young batting talents.
Priya Punia's Outstanding Form in England
Priya Punia and Pratika Rawal were both recently featuring for the India A squad during their tour of England, competing against England A. Under the leadership of captain Harleen Deol, India A clinched the 50-over series with a commendable 2-1 margin. While Rawal featured in the opening two fixtures of that series, she was notably absent from the final match. It is highly likely that she sustained her injury right before that third encounter, ultimately leading to her omission from the upcoming Test match. On the other hand, Punia was a consistent presence in the playing eleven, featuring in all three matches and opening the innings each time. She capitalized on the opportunity, amassing 171 runs at an impressive average of 57.00. Her stellar campaign included crucial half-centuries in the final two matches, where she registered scores of 87 and 61 runs respectively.
The Strategic Advantage and Punia's International Return
The decision by the selection committee to draft Priya Punia into the squad is highly logical and practical. Apart from her current purple patch with the bat and her natural ability to open the innings, Punia is already present in England. This logistical advantage allows her to join the senior national team immediately without the complications of arranging visas or managing long-distance travel arrangements on short notice.
This national recall marks a major career milestone for Punia, who had been out of the national setup since December 2024. Punia first burst onto the international stage during India's tour of New Zealand, making her T20I debut on February 6, 2019. Later that year, she earned her maiden ODI cap in a bilateral series against South Africa. Her domestic career also received a significant boost recently when she was acquired by the South Delhi Superstars for a sum of Rs 5 lakh during the inaugural Women's Delhi Premier League player auction. This sudden opportunity at Lord's could prove to be the ultimate turning point for her international career.
