Delhi Capitals have initiated their tactical preparations for the IPL 2027 edition, with newly installed head coach Sourav Ganguly positioning Rishabh Pant as the cornerstone of their middle order. The wicketkeeper-batter secured his return to Delhi through a direct trade involving Kuldeep Yadav after an underwhelming stint with Lucknow Super Giants, setting the stage for an impactful second tenure.
Pant's Tactical Fit in the Middle Order
Addressing the team balance in an official video shared on the franchise's YouTube channel, Ganguly explained that the squad urgently needed stability and firepower in the middle overs. The management believes Pant's familiarity with the franchise makes him the ideal choice to fill this role effectively as he reintegrates into the squad.
Pant boasts an extensive history with the Delhi setup. Prior to his move to Lucknow in 2025, he featured in 111 matches for Capitals, accumulating 3,284 runs and serving as captain. Since recovering from a severe car crash in 2022, he has encountered recurring physical setbacks and inconsistent runs of form. However, Ganguly highlighted that Pant enjoys batting at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, previously known as Feroz Shah Kotla, expressing optimism that the familiar home venue will inspire the batter to showcase his finest cricket in Delhi colors once again.
The Mentorship Challenge and Ganguly's Philosophy
This assignment also marks a significant milestone for Ganguly, who previously led the Cricket Association of Bengal and served as BCCI president. His association with the Capitals began in 2019 in an advisory capacity, followed by a coaching stint with Pretoria Capitals in South Africa.
Reflecting on the psychological demands of managing a premier cricket team, Ganguly pointed out that directing players requires a mindset distinct from competing on the field. Ganguly explained,
"It is not like being a player, you need to remain calm and understand things."In his view, coaching revolves around managing individual personalities, establishing clear communication, and empowering athletes to excel rather than focusing on personal performance with bat or ball.
Roadmap to the Playoffs and Squad Capabilities
After settling for a sixth-place finish in the preceding tournament, the primary benchmark for Delhi Capitals is securing qualification for the playoffs. The franchise has reached the tournament final only once, during the 2020 campaign. Ganguly was heavily involved in building that competitive core in 2019 and 2020 before departing to assume administrative leadership at the Indian cricket board, and he aims to revive that winning culture.
The coaching staff has a deep roster at its disposal, featuring key international figures including KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs. Ganguly noted that with immense talent assembled inside the dressing room, the objective is to encourage uninhibited execution on matchdays so the franchise can fulfill its true potential and contend at the pinnacle of the league.
