Preparations for the fifth edition of Cricket South Africa's flagship franchise tournament, SA20, have reached a decisive stage as the player auction gets underway on October 7. Following four completed editions featuring six competitive franchises, the dynamic of this auction differs substantially from previous years. Two franchises, Durban's Super Giants and Paarl Royals, will not participate in the bidding process after having already filled every available vacancy in their respective squads. Consequently, the bidding floor will feature only the remaining four teams as they finalize their rosters ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Roster Vacancies and Franchise Purse Balances
Across the four participating teams, a total of 19 roster positions remain to be filled during the auction. Squad openings vary significantly between the franchises. Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, and Pretoria Capitals enter the event with six vacancies each, while Sunrisers Eastern Cape need to acquire just two players to complete their contingent. Financial resources also present a contrasting picture across the bidding tables. Joburg Super Kings lead the pack with a substantial balance of 1.245 million US dollars. Meanwhile, MI Cape Town carry 565,150 US dollars, Pretoria Capitals hold 217,600 US dollars, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape operate with a tighter purse containing 89,150 US dollars.
High-Profile International Names in the Pool
Despite the narrow window of just 19 available contracts, the shortlisted talent pool features several prominent international competitors, both active and retired. Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis stands out as a headline entrant. The auction list also features West Indies power-hitter Kieron Pollard, dynamic mystery spinner Sunil Narine, New Zealand pace spearhead Trent Boult, and England all-rounders Moeen Ali and Sam Curran. Given the strict squad limits and unequal financial reserves, franchises are expected to engage in fierce tactical battles to secure these proven performers.
Schedule, Venue, and Broadcast Details for Indian Viewers
The bidding event takes place in Johannesburg on October 7. Cricket enthusiasts in India will be able to follow all the live developments through digital streaming. The auction begins at 8:30 PM Indian Standard Time and will be broadcast live via the JioHotstar application. Supporters can tune in on mobile devices, tablets, or smart television screens to track real-time team bids and squad compositions.
