The Indian cricket selection committee has unveiled a revamped 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, set to commence on September 13. This selection marks a distinct shift in strategy following the July tour of Zimbabwe, where several fresh faces were integrated into the lineup after consecutive series setbacks against England and Ireland. Rather than continuing with an experimental combination, the selectors have opted to re-introduce key senior players to fortify the team structure.
Senior Stars Make Their Return to the T20I Setup
Among the notable additions to the squad is wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, whose inclusion has sparked significant discussion. Samson was not part of the roster during the Zimbabwe tour, a decision that had drawn wide public attention and debate at the time despite official indications that he had been rested. His entry creates healthy competition for the top-order batting positions.
Premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah makes his comeback to the T20I squad for the first time since March. However, his actual participation in the three fixtures remains contingent upon receiving final physical fitness clearance from the BCCI medical staff. In addition to Bumrah and Samson, versatile all-rounder Axar Patel also makes a return to the national setup after missing out on the previous tour to Zimbabwe.
Eight Players Dropped from the Previous Tour Squad
To accommodate the returning experienced names, the selectors made sweeping changes, dropping eight players who were part of the Zimbabwe contingent. The list of omitted players comprises Rinku Singh, Mayank Yadav, Suryansh Shedge, Harsh Dubey, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma, and Prabhsimran Singh.
The exclusion of middle-order batter Rinku Singh stands out as one of the most unexpected decisions. Despite being part of India's T20 World Cup winning squad in 2024, Rinku has been struggling to cement his permanent place in the playing squad. Similarly, young pace bowler Mayank Yadav was also left out of the final selection for the Afghanistan fixtures, alongside domestic emerging players who received opportunities in the previous series.
Complete 15-Member Squad Composition
The selection committee has appointed Shreyas Iyer to lead the team as captain, with Tilak Varma designated as vice-captain for the three matches against Afghanistan. The roster balances experienced international campaigners alongside emerging talented performers.
