A breathtaking display of batsmanship saw Indian skipper Shubman Gill etch his name into the annals of limited-overs cricket during the recently concluded three-match one-day international assignment against West Indies. India sealed the bilateral contest with a 2-1 margin, primarily driven by Gill's run-scoring spree at the top of the order. The captain dictated terms early on, registering a magnificent century in the series opener before following it up with a record-setting double century in the subsequent fixture. While the third game saw him depart early with just a single run to his name, the aggregate tallies he put together across the contest placed him in territory uncharted by any previous Indian skipper.
Surpassing Brendan Taylor's Long-Standing Global Mark
With his series tally, Shubman Gill captured the world record for the most runs scored by a captain in a three-match one-day international series, overhauling a 15-year-old mark previously held by Zimbabwe's Brendan Taylor. Over the course of three innings, Gill amassed 334 runs while registering an exceptional batting average of 167. This feat made him only the second captain in one-day history to cross the 300-run threshold in a three-game series. Taylor had held the premier spot since 2011, when he struck 310 runs against New Zealand. Gill's dominant knocks ensured the Zimbabwean veteran's long-lived benchmark finally fell by a comfortable margin.
Outpacing Milestones Set by Babar Azam and Virat Kohli
Gill's aggregate run total also saw him vault past several contemporary and former international leaders. Within Indian cricket, the record for most runs by a captain in a three-match ODI series previously belonged to Virat Kohli, who produced 263 runs against New Zealand in 2017. Pakistani leader Babar Azam had also authored a stellar series back in 2021 against Australia, compiling 276 runs. Meanwhile, West Indian captain Shai Hope put together a prolific showing of his own in the 2026 series against India by piling up 278 runs. In addition, Khurram Khan of the United Arab Emirates sits prominently on the all-time leaderboard with 270 runs compiled against Afghanistan in 2014.
Equaling Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh
In recognition of his prolific batting display across the series, Gill walked away with the Player of the Series distinction. This accolade marked the seventh Player of the Series award of his one-day international career, allowing him to draw level with former Indian greats Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Yuvraj Singh. In the historical ranking of Indian cricketers who have collected this honour in one-day internationals, Gill now trails only two stalwarts: Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Despite the minor setback of a low score in the concluding contest, his aggregate output underscored a historic series campaign as captain.
