Rugby player Totoa Auvaa, who previously grabbed headlines following a high-profile nightclub altercation involving England cricket captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, has now faced severe consequences from his own club. English rugby club Saracens has taken the firm decision to terminate Auvaa's contract with immediate effect following a completely separate incident, stating that his recent conduct fell well below the expected standards of the organization.
The Original Nightclub Incident in London
The controversy surrounding Auvaa first erupted in June of this year at the Rex Rooms nightclub located in the Chelsea area of London. At the time, England cricketers Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at the venue as well. According to available accounts, Auvaa attempted to throw a punch at Atkinson, but the blow missed the cricketer and instead struck a nearby security guard. The member of security required immediate medical attention as a result of the unexpected blow.
Impact on the England Cricket Team
The fallout from that violent incident extended directly into the national cricket setup. The England and Wales Cricket Board initiated a formal investigation, and during the proceedings, they sidelined both Stokes and Atkinson from the second match of a three-test series against New Zealand. The two cricketers had visited the nightclub to celebrate a victory in the opening test, but in doing so, they breached the team's mandated midnight curfew.
However, the official board investigation ultimately cleared both players of any active responsibility in the physical altercation. The findings established that Stokes had no hand in the fight and did not even witness the events unfold. Furthermore, evidence indicated that Atkinson was attacked without any provocation and chose not retaliate. Although the board acknowledged that both athletes had breached certain contract clauses, they were let off with a formal written warning.
Saracens Takes Immediate Disciplinary Action
During the initial period following the nightclub fracas, Saracens had publicly stood behind Auvaa. Club teammate and England international Jamie George had even spoken out in defense of the player at the time. However, following a fresh allegation this weekend regarding an incident in St Albans where Auvaa was accused of punching another individual, the club launched an immediate internal review.
On Monday, Saracens confirmed that the 21-year-old was no longer part of the organization. In an official statement released by the club, management confirmed that the senior men's academy member had left the club with immediate effect, stressing that the behavior displayed did not align with the strict code of conduct required of anyone representing the Saracens name both on and off the pitch.
