Sri Lanka's troubles have compounded following a heavy 165-run defeat against India in the opening match of their two-Test series. Shortly after the setback in Galle, the hosts suffered a double blow as key middle-order batters Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal were officially ruled out of the upcoming second Test scheduled to be played in Colombo. Furthermore, opening batter Pathum Nissanka also remains a major doubt for the series finale, leaving the team management with significant selection headaches ahead of the crucial encounter.
Concussion Protocol Rules Out Dinesh Chandimal
Dinesh Chandimal has been sidelined for the second Test due to mandatory International Cricket Council (ICC) health protocols. The veteran player sustained a blow to the head during the fourth day of the Galle Test, requiring a concussion substitute. Under ICC regulations, any cricketer removed from a match due to a head injury or concussion must complete a mandatory seven-day rest and monitoring period before returning to competitive action. Pasindu Sooriyabandara was brought in as Chandimal's replacement in Galle, making his Test debut in the process. Because of the strict seven-day timeline, Chandimal cannot be cleared in time for the Colombo match.
Kusal Mendis Continues Recovery from Hamstring Strain
Senior batter Kusal Mendis remains sidelined as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury suffered during the early stages of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Mendis has not featured in any competitive cricket since sustaining the injury and was consequently forced to sit out the series opener in Galle. In his absence, Niroshan Dickwella was drafted into the side and made an immediate impression by scoring 80 runs in the first innings. With Mendis still unable to achieve full match fitness, Dickwella is expected to retain his place in the playing XI for the second Test in Colombo.
Uncertainty Surrounds Pathum Nissanka's Availability
Adding to Sri Lanka's injury woes, opener Pathum Nissanka remains uncertain for the Colombo Test. Nissanka underwent wrist surgery in June and has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation ever since. While team medical staff indicate that Nissanka is closer to achieving match fitness than Mendis, he continues to experience pain and discomfort while batting in the nets. The team management is reluctant to rush him back into action unless he is completely pain-free, making his inclusion unlikely for the final match of the series.
Head Coach Gary Kirsten Views Injuries as Chance for Youth
Addressing the team's selection predicament after the Galle defeat, Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten confirmed the status of all three injured players. Kirsten stated that Mendis remains unavailable owing to his hamstring issue, while Chandimal is ruled out due to medical protocols. While acknowledging the hardship of losing experienced players in a high-stakes series, Kirsten emphasized that this situation creates a major window of opportunity for younger cricketers who have performed consistently in domestic competitions over recent seasons. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is expected to announce its modified squad for the second Test shortly, with several tactical changes anticipated.
