The Kerala High Court has delivered a significant verdict in the high-profile Mini Cooper accident case in Kochi that left three young people dead. While granting bail to four accused individuals in the case, the court ruled that the primary accused, Suhail Sajeev, will have to remain in judicial custody for a little longer as his release has been stayed for 10 days. The case drew immense public attention primarily due to the court's observation that bail decisions cannot be influenced by public sentiment or the degree of anger among citizens regarding an incident. The widespread outrage that followed the accident has once again brought the tragic case back into the headlines.
Court Orders Release of Three Co-Accused
Justice Kauser Edappagath issued the order while hearing the bail pleas filed by Suhail Sajeev and three other individuals linked to the crash. The other accused were identified as Ninav, Joyal Anto, and Amin Shah, with the court directing their immediate release from custody. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old prime accused Suhail will spend 10 more days in detention. The prosecution informed the bench that the investigation is still ongoing and is expected to be wrapped up within two weeks. Defense counsel argued that all the accused are 19-year-old students whose education has suffered due to prolonged judicial custody, though the prosecution strongly opposed the bail applications.
Public Sentiment Cannot Decide Judicial Outcomes
During the proceedings, the High Court acknowledged that the accident was deeply unfortunate and resulted in the loss of three lives, but stressed that courts must base their rulings strictly on the law and established legal procedures. The bench noted that regardless of how intense public feelings might be surrounding a particular case, those sentiments cannot form the basis for granting or denying bail. The court also called for details regarding the evidence collected by investigators up to this point in the proceedings.
The Crash That Occurred on October 11
The fatal accident took place on the morning of October 11 near Nedumbassery. According to investigators, Suhail was driving the Mini Cooper at a reckless speed while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The luxury vehicle rammed into a scooter, resulting in the instantaneous deaths of two young women aged around 21 and a young man. The aftermath of the crash saw massive controversy sparked by alleged remarks made by Suhail. Reports indicated that he had casually remarked that roads are meant for driving and that his father would take care of the legal repercussions, fueling further public anger.
BMW Crash Data Reveals 162 Kmph Speed
A crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing legal proceedings has been the technical examination of the vehicle. Police revealed that the manufacturer BMW conducted an analysis of the Mini Cooper's crash data. The report established that five seconds prior to the impact, the car was hurtling at a staggering speed of approximately 162 kilometers per hour. Brakes were applied roughly one second before the collision, at which point the vehicle was still traveling at 144 kilometers per hour.
CCTV Footage and Advanced Safety Module Confirm Reckless Driving
Investigators stated that closed-circuit television footage corroborated the vehicle's excessive speed, showing the car covering a distance of 500 meters in a mere 11 seconds. Data retrieved from the car's advanced crash safety module further solidified the technical foundation of the police investigation. Authorities confirmed that further inquiries into the tragic incident are currently underway.
