A shocking incident has come to light in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka, where a dispute between a pet dog and a stray animal escalated into a fatal shooting. In Nadavalli village, located within the jurisdiction of the Anandapura police station, a man identified as Lingamurthy shot and killed a stray dog using a firearm following repeated fights between the stray and his own pet animal. The stray dog died instantly on the spot from the gunshot wounds. Following the incident, the local police initiated prompt legal action and registered a case against the accused under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Arms Act. Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the origin of the weapon and whether the accused possessed any legal permission to hold it.
Past Conflicts and the Thursday Incident
According to details gathered during the initial police probe, the stray dog had been roaming around Lingamurthy's residential premises for a considerable period. Whenever the stray animal approached the house, Lingamurthy's pet dog would bark at it, frequently leading to aggressive confrontations between the two animals. The situation turned bitter some time ago when the stray dog attacked and bit Lingamurthy's pet. Since that incident, Lingamurthy had reportedly harbored immense anger towards the stray animal.
The sequence of events leading to the shooting unfolded on Thursday when a fellow villager, identified as Borappa, was taking cattle outside the village for grazing. As the livestock moved along the village path, the stray dog followed behind them, eventually arriving near Lingamurthy's residence. Upon spotting the stray animal right outside his house once again, Lingamurthy's past resentment resurfaced, causing him to lose his temper.
Firearm Retrieved from Home to Shoot the Animal
Infuriated by the presence of the stray dog near his property, Lingamurthy rushed inside his house and emerged carrying a firearm. Without hesitation, he aimed directly at the animal and pulled the trigger. The bullet struck the stray dog in its back and thigh region. Owing to the severity of the gunshot injuries and significant blood loss, the animal collapsed and succumbed to its injuries on the spot.
The sound of the gunshot created panic in the neighborhood, drawing local residents to the scene. The incident was promptly reported to the Anandapura police. A police team reached the location, took custody of the deceased animal's body, and began documenting evidence to establish the exact sequence of events.
Investigation Into Unlicensed Weapon and Public Safety Risks
The central focus of the ongoing police investigation revolves around the legal status of the firearm used in the crime. Police officers are attempting to determine how Lingamurthy acquired the weapon and whether he had any valid government license or permit to possess or operate it. Preliminary findings by the investigating authorities indicate that the gun was held without a valid license.
Police officials emphasized that discharging an illegal firearm in a populated residential area poses a severe hazard to public safety. Firing weapons in residential neighborhoods carries a grave risk of accidental injury or harm to bystanders and local residents. Police authorities stated that comprehensive legal proceedings will be pursued against the accused for illegally keeping a firearm, endangering public safety, and causing the death of an animal.
