Commuters in the national capital are in line for a major upgrade, with the Delhi government clearing 2,800 new air-conditioned, low-floor electric buses for its fleet under the first phase of the PM E-Drive scheme. The vehicles are expected to begin carrying passengers from next year.
Cleaner air and a stronger transport backbone
According to the Chief Minister's Office, the decision serves two connected purposes: bringing down the pollution that hangs over the capital and reinforcing a public transport system that millions rely on every day. Electric buses run without tailpipe emissions, which makes them a natural fit for a city battling toxic air, and adding them in such numbers signals how central clean mobility has become to the government's planning.
The push does not stop at these 2,800 vehicles. The administration intends to grow its overall bus fleet to roughly 14,000 by 2028-29, a target that would sharply widen the reach of scheduled services and cut the wait many riders currently endure. Taken together, the electric induction and the fleet expansion form part of a broader effort to modernise transport infrastructure while chipping away at emissions.
A new West Delhi route already on trial
Earlier in July, the Delhi Transport Corporation rolled out Route 753 Ext on a trial basis, designed for people moving between Central Delhi and a cluster of residential pockets in West Delhi. The service opens up direct connectivity for residents of Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Hastsal, Shiv Vihar, Uttam Nagar, Hari Nagar and neighbouring localities.
On this route, passengers can now reach Mori Gate, Kashmere Gate, the Old Delhi Railway Station and the New Delhi Railway Station without changing buses, an official statement noted. Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh framed the new line as evidence of the government's resolve to make public transport easier to reach and friendlier for daily riders. He added that under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, services are being expanded steadily so that residents get a safe, convenient and citizen-focused system.
Weaning India off imported oil
The wider logic behind electrifying transport was underlined by PMO Advisor Tarun Kapoor, who argued that spreading electric vehicles across the country is key to cutting India's reliance on imported oil, an effort that will demand coordination between the Centre, state governments and industry. "We want to reduce our dependence on imported oil," he said, stressing that every stakeholder has a part to play in the shift.
