Political tensions in the national capital escalated on Friday as members of the Cockroach Janata Party gathered outside the Parliament Street police station to stage a vociferous demonstration. The core objective of this protest was to demand immediate legal action in connection with the assault on Sanjay Kumar, the father of Nishi Azad who had participated in the Jantar Mantar protests. An individual named Swatantra Bhardwaj has been accused of allegedly attacking Sanjay Kumar. Led by party leader Saurav Das, the demonstrators accused the Delhi police of inaction, asserting that no substantial steps have been taken against the perpetrator. The members are persistently demanding justice for both Sanjay and Nishi.
Rahul Gandhi Intervenes And Assures Assistance
The controversy gained further momentum after Nishi posted a video appeal seeking help from senior political figures, following which Rahul Gandhi reached out to her with assurances of support. In his public statement, Rahul Gandhi told Nishi that she need not panic and that he stands firmly beside her. He alleged that she was targeted specifically because she raises her voice for her community and student rights. Criticizing the authorities, he questioned why an assailant who harmed a Dalit girl's father roams freely while the police crack down on students. He reiterated that the fight for justice will continue until a proper resolution is achieved.
Accused Defends Podcast Remarks After Public Outcry
The situation intensified significantly after the accused, Swatantra Bhardwaj, openly admitted in a podcast interview that he had assaulted Sanjay Kumar. He had claimed during the broadcast that he avoided imprisonment due to his political connections. However, facing immense backlash, Bhardwaj subsequently clarified his stance, claiming that his actions were strictly in self-defense. He argued that his remarks from the podcast were misinterpreted and taken out of context by the public.
Delhi Police Issues Fact Check And Medical Clarification
In response to the mounting allegations of a brutal assault, the Delhi police released a detailed fact check stating that the injuries sustained by Sanjay Kumar were minor. According to doctors at RML Hospital, the wounds were superficial and caused by a metallic bangle rather than a deadly weapon. The police dismissed claims of a fractured skull as completely baseless and inconsistent with the medical examination reports. Furthermore, authorities confirmed that questioning of suspects Suraj Kumar and Swatantra Bhardwaj has been conducted, and a chargesheet will be filed shortly while refuting any claims of external interference.
