The national capital continues to grapple with severe structural safety hazards as illegal constructions and aging infrastructure trigger fatal accidents. On September 6, a five-story PG building collapsed in the congested Satya Niketan area near Delhi University's South Campus, leaving seven people dead. This tragedy raised the total death toll from building collapse incidents in Delhi to 16 this year, with all casualties occurring across three major fatal events according to official reports and police statements.
Fatal Collapse Timeline From Saket to Rohini
The city has witnessed multiple high-impact building disasters over recent months. In late May, six people lost their lives in a commercial building collapse in Saket. This was followed by another incident on July 8 in Rohini, where three people died after an under-construction facility caved in. The recent September 6 collapse in Satya Niketan added seven more fatalities to the tally. Municipal officials noted that nearly all these structural failures shared systemic causes, including unauthorized construction, illegal floor additions, absence of structural stability checks, and aging building frames.
Magisterial Probe Exposes Municipal Lapse in Saket
On May 30, a multi-story commercial building housing coaching institutes, offices, and eateries collapsed unexpectedly in Saket, South Delhi. Most of the six victims were students preparing for competitive examinations. A magisterial inquiry ordered by the Delhi government held the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primarily responsible for the disaster. The investigation established that the third and fourth floors of the structure were constructed completely illegally.
Despite receiving formal complaints about unauthorized construction over two months prior to the collapse, municipal officials failed to take enforcement action. The inquiry further revealed that certain MCD staff attempted to forge official documents after the event to fabricate prior compliance records. Consequently, the municipal body suspended two engineers, while law enforcement authorities arrested the building owner and two contractors.
Rohini Collapse and Simplified Plan Misuse
Amid heavy downpours on July 8, an under-construction four-story building collapsed in Sector-16, Rohini. Three individuals died on the spot while several workers were trapped under falling debris. Addressing the incident, MCD clarified that the building had secured auto-approved building plans under the 'Saral Yojana' framework, which allows property owners to obtain self-certified construction permits upon submitting documents verified by chartered architects or engineers.
Structural Failures in Mukundpur and Karawal Nagar
Two additional non-fatal collapse events caused significant property damage in early June. On June 2, an illegal utensil-dyeing unit operating in Mukundpur, North Delhi, collapsed following an LPG cylinder blast, injuring 11 workers. The very next day, on June 3, a four-story building in Karawal Nagar, North-East Delhi, developed massive structural cracks during municipal drain repair work and subsequently caved in. Disasters were averted as emergency teams successfully evacuated all residents shortly before the building collapsed.
