For the first time since the historic cross-border military strike concluded, India has publicly identified the six soldiers who gave their lives during Operation Sindoor. The Strike and the Story Behind It
In the intervening night of May 6 and 7, 2025, the Indian Armed Forces executed a historic and covert military operation targeting nine terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This mission was a direct response to the brutal terrorist attack that struck Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in April-May 2025, killing several Indian civilians and leaving many women widowed. The operation was named Sindoor, after the red vermillion that marks the marital status of Hindu women, as a symbol of both the grief of the bereaved and the nation's collective resolve to answer that brutality. The Indian Armed Forces carried out the operation with extraordinary courage, successfully striking all nine targets.
Army and Air Force Both Among the Fallen
Of the six soldiers who were martyred, five served in the Indian Army and one was a sergeant from the Indian Air Force. Most of the six lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir in the course of the operation. Two have received gallantry honours: Rifleman Sunil Kumar has been posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar has been given the Vayu Padak.
