Tensions at Jamia Millia Islamia have escalated sharply as student demonstrations continued across the campus despite official statements suggesting a resolution. On October 26, assertions emerged that the stalemate had ended after the administration agreed to major student demands. However, the protesting students completely rejected those claims, maintaining their agitation and declaring that the struggle will not pause without concrete, transparent, and written commitments from the university authorities. In response to the intensifying standoff on campus, the university took significant operational measures by moving all academic classes to an online format until further notice.
Fresh Hunger Strike Intensifies the Ongoing Campus Agitation
Dismissing administrative announcements regarding an amicable settlement, the protesters declared that their agitation remains fully active. Giving further momentum to the demonstration, student activist Abuzar, affiliated with SFI and Jamia, launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding the immediate restoration of the student union. The protesting student body has firmly reiterated that peaceful normalcy will not return merely on verbal assurances. They insist that every single demand must be fulfilled through transparent and written documentation before any resolution can be considered.
Students Rebut Administrative Claims on Apologies and Elections
The university administration had earlier maintained that students consented to issuing an apology for alleged defamatory remarks and agreed to pull down contentious social media posts. The demonstrators termed these assertions completely false and misleading. Protesting students pointed out that the administration has failed to provide any definite timeline for conducting student union elections or approving the student union constitution. Alongside the core demand for student representation, the demonstrators reiterated their insistence on the immediate resignation of both the proctor and the security advisor.
University Issues Final Eviction Ultimatum and Enforces Online Teaching
To preserve campus order and ensure instructional continuity, the university administration mandated that all academic courses across programs transition to online mode until subsequent instructions. Concurrently, the administration adopted a stern stance toward the agitators, issuing a final warning to immediately vacate the Gulistan-e-Ghalib building and the Ghalib Lawns situated in the North Campus. The official notice clearly warned that non-compliance within the prescribed schedule would invite severe disciplinary measures alongside formal legal proceedings against the defiant students.
