A surprise inspection conducted by the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) on 20 August at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Inter College, located in the Pandu Nagar area of Kanpur city, Uttar Pradesh, exposed severe institutional negligence and administrative lapses. Out of 55 officially registered students across all classes, only 8 students were physically present during the official visit. Multiple classrooms were found completely vacant, while the school principal was absent from his designated post with his office chamber locked from the outside. DIOS Praveen Kumar Tiwari expressed deep surprise over the abysmal attendance figures and immediate staff absence. Attempts to reach Principal BK Mishra telephonically failed to yield any satisfactory or legitimate justification regarding his absence from duty.
Surprise Inspection Reveals Empty Classrooms Across Grades
During the verification of classroom registers against physical attendance, DIOS officials compiled a class-by-class breakdown that highlighted an alarming state of student absenteeism across all grades
- Class 6: Out of 2 registered students, zero students were present in the classroom.
- Class 7: None of the enrolled students were present at the institution.
- Class 8: 3 students were registered, but physical attendance remained absolute zero.
- Class 9: Out of 7 registered students, only 1 student had attended the school.
- Class 10: Out of 6 registered board-grade students, not a single student was present.
- Class 11: Out of 17 registered students, merely 2 students were in attendance.
- Class 12: Out of 19 registered senior secondary students, only 5 students had reached school.
In total, against an official enrollment strength of 55 students, merely 8 children were physically present inside the school building during inspection hours, posing serious questions about administrative oversight and educational engagement at the institute.
Teachers and Support Staff Absenteeism Exposed
The inspection extended beyond student attendance to reveal widespread absenteeism among both teaching and non-teaching personnel. Alongside Principal BK Mishra, Assistant Teacher Harinarayan Trivedi and Assistant Teacher Anoop Tiwari were completely missing from the school campus.
A notable irregularity surfaced regarding Assistant Teacher Kuldeep Yadav. While his signature was explicitly logged in the attendance register for the day, physical verification by the inspecting team confirmed that he was not present inside the school premises. Officers took grave exception to teachers signing attendance records while abandoning their physical duties.
Non-teaching support staff were similarly absent during official hours. Clerks and attendants Vibhuti Pandey and Jai Kumar Tiwari were logged absent during the check. Additionally, contractual workers Ajay Kumar and Kumari Prashri Devi failed to be present at their assigned positions during the inspection.
Strict Penal Action and Salary Withholding Enforced
Reacting swiftly to the systemic failure, unauthorized absences, and fake signature records, DIOS Praveen Kumar Tiwari ordered immediate disciplinary and financial penalties against all defaulting personnel.
A formal recommendation has been dispatched to higher authorities seeking departmental disciplinary action against Principal BK Mishra. Furthermore, the August salary for all teachers, administrative clerks, attendants, and contractual staff who were found absent during the 20 August inspection has been placed on hold until further orders. Education department officials reiterated that regular attendance of staff and instruction for students in government and government-aided institutions remain mandatory, warning that dereliction of duty will face uncompromising administrative measures.
