In the late nineties and early noughties, Ali G was an absolute sensation. While he might have since been overtaken by Borat in terms of cultural ubiquity, he remains Sacha Baron Cohen’s most celebrated creation, stemming from Da Ali G Show and stretching to the 2002 big-screen outing Ali G Indahouse, alongside an appearance in Madonna's music video for 'Music'. A decade has passed since his last surprise appearance at the 2016 Oscars, where Cohen literally stepped on stage in character, and now he is returning to disrupt Hollywood once more. Ali G: Who Iz I? serves as the official sequel movie, arriving 24 years after Indahouse, and the first trailer has officially landed.
Behind the Secret Comeback and Plot Details
Rumours of an Ali G comeback emerged earlier this year when Cohen was spotted filming in costume, before the strict secrecy was dropped when he showed up at Wimbledon's Men's finals during the summer. The sequel marks Cohen's feature directorial debut, following Ali G as he causes chaos while grappling with impending fatherhood alongside his girlfriend Julie, played by Morgana Robinson. Ultimately, any narrative acts primarily as a vehicle for the character to wreak havoc on unsuspecting citizens. Who Iz I? arrives six years after Cohen previously revived his satirical persona for the sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
Release Date and Audience Expectations
Does the character still hold up in modern times? Will this cinematic outing match the surprisingly sharp quality of the second Borat movie? Audiences will find out when Ali G: Who Iz I? hits cinemas on October 23.
