Legal scrutiny surrounding actor Imran Khan has intensified significantly following his presence at a recent public agitation in Mumbai. On October 10, a demonstration took place at August Kranti Maidan demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, where local police detained several attendees, including the actor. The police intervention quickly brought national attention to the incident, prompting regulatory scrutiny regarding Khan's citizenship status and the legal grounds for his continued stay in India. Following preliminary findings, competent authorities formally instructed him to depart the country by October 28.
Official Verification of Citizenship and OCI Guidelines
The controversy prompted an immediate investigation by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office into the actor's legal status within India. Official records established that Khan does not hold Indian citizenship, confirming that he is an American citizen residing in India on the basis of an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) registration. While an OCI card facilitates extended residence along with specific economic and travel privileges for eligible foreign nationals of Indian origin, it strictly does not confer Indian citizenship. Under established statutory guidelines, foreign nationals holding such status are prohibited from participating in domestic political demonstrations, making his active presence at the August Kranti Maidan gathering a direct regulatory violation.
Strong Reaction and Support from Gajendra Chauhan
Welcoming the regulatory directive issued against Khan, actor Gajendra Chauhan voiced unreserved support for the administrative measure. He said, "I am very happy that the traitors hidden in the country have been asked to leave from here." Chauhan pointed out that Khan, who is also the nephew of actor Aamir Khan, gained immense fame, wealth, and public standing while living in India, yet chose to violate local legal parameters. He maintained that the government did the right thing by taking note of the matter and initiating formal expulsion procedures against the actor.
Demands for an Immediate 24-Hour Departure Window
Urging authorities to demonstrate zero leniency, Chauhan stated that the current timeline granted to the actor was far too generous. He argued that instead of giving Khan until October 28 to leave the territory, the administration should have enforced a swift 24-hour departure deadline. In his view, allowing foreign nationals who breach domestic regulations to remain on Indian soil poses continuous risks. Calling the episode an essential clean-up drive to uncover and penalise individuals acting against national protocols, Chauhan urged the government to accelerate identification mechanisms and penalise any similar violations promptly.
