Superstar Rajinikanth has once again demonstrated his unmatched box office supremacy at the age of 75. His heavily anticipated action extravaganza Jailer 2 made a thunderous arrival on the big screen this Thursday, posting extraordinary numbers on its first day. Powered by monumental audience anticipation, the sequel outpaced several major cinematic milestones, easily eclipsing the opening day figures of blockbusters like Kamal Haasan's Vikram and Jana Nayakan.
Frenzy in Pre-Sales and Advance Bookings
The stage for this historic theatrical debut was set well before the opening day reels rolled. Domestic advance bookings officially opened five days prior to release on October 10, receiving a phenomenal reception from filmgoers nationwide. Pre-release numbers picked up substantial momentum from the start, confirming early projections that the production was heading toward one of the biggest theatrical debuts the Tamil film industry had ever recorded.
By Wednesday, October 14, global advance sales had crossed Rs 80 crore across international and domestic territories. In India alone, opening day pre-sales accounted for 18 lakh tickets sold, locking in an impressive Rs 37 crore gross collection before a single public show had even commenced on Thursday morning.
Opening Day Haul Across 16,488 Screenings
Across the country, cinema operators scheduled 16,488 shows for Jailer 2 on Thursday. Up to 11 pm on its debut day, the action film accumulated a massive domestic net revenue of Rs 59.70 crore. This opening haul not only surpassed the day-one performance of the franchise's original 2023 release, but also sailed past the initial collections registered by heavyweight Tamil releases such as GOAT, Vikram, and Jana Nayakan.
Securing the Fourth-Highest Opening in Tamil Cinema History
With an opening day net take of Rs 59.70 crore, Jailer 2 officially entered the record books by securing the fourth-largest opening ever witnessed in Tamil cinematic history. Across the entire industry, only three titles have registered higher opening day figures: Thalapathy Vijay's Leo (Rs 65 crore), Rajinikanth's Coolie (Rs 65 crore), and Rajinikanth's sci-fi spectacle 2.0 (Rs 60 crore).
In crossing the Rs 59.70 crore mark, the sequel displaced several renowned box office titans. It comfortably sailed past the opening collections of Beast (Rs 49 crore), GOAT (Rs 44 crore), Jana Nayakan (Rs 43 crore), and Vikram (Rs 32 crore), cementing another historic commercial high in the veteran actor's career.
Nelson Dilipkumar Directs Star-Studded Sequel
Produced under the Sun Pictures banner, Jailer 2 represents a rare departure in Rajinikanth's celebrated filmography, as the actor has traditionally steered clear of starring in direct sequels. The narrative brings back his widely celebrated persona, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, placing him against an entirely fresh and lethal network of adversaries under the direction of Nelson Dilipkumar.
Returning cast members Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Rithvik reprise their familiar roles from the original installment. Elevating the scope of the sequel, the film introduces SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan, and Jatin Sarna in key roles. Amplifying fan excitement further are special cameo appearances by Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff. The soundtrack and background score are composed by Anirudh Ravichander, following the original Jailer's worldwide commercial run that grossed over Rs 600 crore.
