Before making a massive splash at the box office earlier this year with the chiller Obsession, 27-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker honed his genre skills crafting scary short films alongside his collaborator Cooper Tomlinson on their shared YouTube channel. Now, in an unexpected partnership with tech giant Windows, Barker has made a thrilling return to his roots with a brand new short titled 'Mama Bear', starring Jon Lee Richardson in the lead role.
A Masterclass in Creepy Atmosphere
Curry Barker continues to prove his mastery of building dread by placing unsettling elements right in the corner of the frame. The narrative puts house cleaner Floyd, portrayed by Richardson, through an absolute wringer as a routine workday spirals into a waking nightmare. As a frantic phone call, a loaded gun, and a shadowy doppelgänger all converge on the unfortunate protagonist, viewers are treated to classic atmospheric horror.
Decoding the Title and Future Releases
While early speculation suggested the title might connect to the protagonist of Obsession, it appears to reference Katie Sarife's gun-wielding Lacey, who experiences a catastrophic case of mistaken identity. The short film is packed with the dimly lit, symbolically rich, and ultraviolent hallmarks that define a traditional Curry Barker fright fest.
Looking Ahead to Upcoming Features
Even though 'Mama Bear' is merely a brief five-minute treat, fans will not have to wait ages for Barker's next major cinematic ventures. The faux paranormal investigator feature Anything But Ghosts is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 7, 2027, while another upcoming horror project is actively being developed at Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
