Legendary actress Rekha, who has left an enduring legacy in Indian cinema through her celebrated acting career, has reflected on her upbringing, family values, and early professional journey. Throughout her life, the actress has credited her success to her mother Pushpavalli. During public conversations and special appearances, she has frequently shared intimate anecdotes about their bond, including childhood memories of strict discipline when she struggled with academics.
Academic Struggles and the Bamboo Cane Punishment
Looking back at her childhood, Rekha revealed that she was not strong in academics and frequently found school subjects difficult. Whenever she struggled or failed in school, her mother would discipline her using a long, slender bamboo cane. Rekha noted that while the cane appeared very thin, the strikes caused severe pain.
Sharing a lighthearted memory of her innocence as a young girl, Rekha recounted an incident where she received her report card but could not properly understand the remarks and marks written on the marksheet. Assuming she had performed exceptionally well and scored great numbers, she presented it at home. However, the moment her mother inspected the sheet and realized she had failed, she reprimanded and beat her thoroughly with the bamboo cane in anger. Rekha humorously claimed that marks from those childhood punishments are still visible on her body today, narrating the playful yet strict mother-daughter dynamic in a way that drew laughter from everyone present.
Signing 40 Films at Once and Lessons in Humility
Reflecting on the sheer volume of work she handled during the peak of her acting career, Rekha stated that at one point, she had signed at least 40 films simultaneously and was actively working on 14 movies at the same time. Despite the massive workload and rising fame, her mother Pushpavalli made sure she stayed grounded.
Her mother consistently advised her that no matter how much fame she accumulated or even if she won an Oscar award, she had to conduct herself with utmost humility. Pushpavalli explicitly told her that she would consider her a true daughter only as long as she remained humble, warning that losing that modesty would mean losing that bond.
Mischievous Days on Set and a Passionate Fan Encounter
Rekha also looked back at her mischievous personality during her youth, admitting that her playful antics often led to reprimands and scoldings from film directors and choreographers on set.
In addition, she recounted a dramatic encounter with an obsessive admirer. Describing the moment, Rekha explained that while her vehicle was traveling, a devoted fan suddenly lay down on the road directly in front of her moving car. The fan shouted that if she did not step out of the vehicle and give him a warm hug, she might as well run him over and kill him. Seeing the fan's extreme persistence and desperate plea, Rekha stepped out of the car to greet him personally.
