A historic financial benchmark has been set in the international film distribution space ahead of the arrival of one of Indian cinema's most anticipated titles. The worldwide overseas theatrical rights for Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming action venture, ‘King’, have been locked at an unprecedented 175 crore rupees, an amount translating to over 18 million dollars. This transaction marks the highest overseas minimum guarantee ever committed for an Indian feature film. While the massive pre-release agreement underscores the immense global pull of its lead star, it simultaneously places an exceptionally high revenue target on the film's international theatrical run.
Phars Films Secures International Distribution
The global rights outside the domestic market have been secured by Phars Films, who stepped in with an aggressive minimum guarantee commitment of 175 crore rupees. Traditionally, the overseas theatrical releases of Shah Rukh Khan's marquee titles were predominantly steered by Yash Raj Films. In 2023, both global blockbusters ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’ were distributed internationally under the Yash Raj Films banner. Phars Films brings substantial market expertise to this release, having previously handled the overseas rollout of the Prabhas-led action thriller ‘Saaho’ alongside various distribution collaborations with Yash Raj Films in past ventures. Anticipation surrounding the project grew further following the recent unveiling of a brand-new poster.
The Math Behind the 350 Crore Recovery Target
Securing the rights at such an extraordinary valuation comes with substantial box office pressure. In overseas theatrical markets, the standard distributor share generally hovers around 50 percent of the total gross box office receipts. Consequently, in order to simply recover their upfront investment of 175 crore rupees, Phars Films will require ‘King’ to gross between 350 crore and 375 crore rupees internationally. Any operational profit for the distributor will begin only after the worldwide overseas collections cross this substantial threshold, making a wide theatrical reach and sustained audience turnout critical.
Chasing Benchmarks Set by Pathaan, Jawan, and RRR
While the required break-even milestone is steep, historical box office precedents show that top-tier Indian spectacles can achieve these figures. Shah Rukh Khan's twin releases in 2023, ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’, both crossed approximately 400 crore rupees in overseas gross collections during their theatrical runs. In the broader landscape of Indian cinematic exports, titles like ‘Dhurandhar 2’ generated around 460 crore rupees internationally, while ‘RRR’ amassed roughly 430 crore rupees across foreign territories. To emerge as a profitable theatrical venture for Phars Films, ‘King’ must match or exceed these benchmark totals.
Director Siddharth Anand and an Ensemble Cast
Directing the high-octane project is Siddharth Anand, who previously collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan on ‘Pathaan’, a film that accumulated more than 1000 crore rupees at the global box office in 2023. ‘King’ also marks a major personal milestone, featuring Shah Rukh Khan alongside his daughter Suhana Khan on the silver screen for the first time. Suhana made her screen debut in 2023 with the feature ‘The Archies’. The supporting cast includes prominent names such as Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghav Juyal, and Saurabh Shukla. ‘King’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters worldwide on 24 December.
