Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri finds himself at the center of a brewing controversy following his candid remarks on Hindu religious practices and traditional pilgrimages. The comments drew an immediate and scathing rebuttal from the Vishva Hindu Parishad, whose leadership denounced his perspective in strong terms. Accusing the filmmaker of displaying deep ingratitude, the socio-religious organisation pointed out that the very community whose trust provided him with professional stature is now seeing its sacred traditions questioned by him.
The Social Media Video That Ignited Controversy
The row originated on Wednesday when Agnihotri reposted a video clip on the social media platform X. The visual documented massive crowds of devotees gathering to seek blessings at Kainchi Dham in Uttarakhand. While amplifying the recording, the director asserted that if the government imposed a tax on religion, India could overnight transform into the wealthiest nation on the planet. Evaluating devotional gatherings through a revenue lens quickly provoked widespread criticism across digital networks.
Sharply Worded Rebuttal from Vishva Hindu Parishad
Reacting to the director's formulation, Vishva Hindu Parishad national spokesperson Vinod Bansal published an extensive message on X on Sunday, directly holding the filmmaker accountable. Bansal argued that public figures who achieved prominence through the backing of Hindu society ought not to attack the heritage and practices that nurtured their success. He accused Agnihotri of repeatedly nitpicking and casting aspersions on religious customs that have endured for generations.
The spokesperson expressed disbelief that the director had chosen to criticize grand gatherings like the Kumbh, sacred temple visits, pilgrimages, revered saints, and the traditional practice of devotional singing. Questioning the filmmaker's spiritual affiliation, Bansal asked whether Agnihotri considers himself a genuine follower of the faith or merely one in name. He claimed that such arguments weaken the confidence of worshippers whose support gave the creator his commercial and cultural platform.
Advocating Cultural Dignity over Civilisational Inferiority
Bansal urged the director to recognize and take pride in India's ancestral heritage, intellectual foundations, cultural ethos, and living spiritual traditions. Instead of harboring an inferiority complex when comparing domestic customs to other civilisations, public figures should cultivate an appreciation for their own heritage, he remarked. Meanwhile, Agnihotri's proposal of levying taxes on pilgrimage destinations continues to stir public debate, with the Vishva Hindu Parishad registering unequivocal displeasure against his assertions.
