Dark underarms are more than just a cosmetic worry for many women, they often chip away at confidence too, which is why so many try assorted home remedies to fight stubborn tanning in that area. Dr. Aanchal Panth, MBBS, MD, dermatologist and aesthetic physician, and founder of Dermafollix Hair Transplant & Skin Clinic, says the condition doesn't always need to be a source of stress. If the underarm area is only slightly darker than the surrounding skin, there's usually nothing to worry about. But if the skin there has grown noticeably thick and the discolouration is more than three shades darker, Dr. Panth says it should be taken seriously.
What actually makes underarms turn dark
According to Dr. Panth, carrying excess weight is one of the biggest reasons behind underarm darkening. When body weight is higher, the skin in the underarm area rubs against itself more frequently, and this constant friction ramps up pigmentation in that spot, gradually deepening its colour. Wearing very tight clothing has a similar effect, since it keeps the skin under continuous friction and worsens the darkening over time. Another major cause is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which happens when the underarm skin suffers some form of injury or irritation. Waxing is a common trigger for this, because pulling hair out from the root often peels the top layer of skin, and the skin darkens as it heals from that irritation. Beyond this, home remedy scrubs, hair removal creams and everyday deodorants can also play a role, since repeated use of these products can irritate the delicate skin in that area and contribute to the discolouration.
When the darkening becomes a genuine concern
Dr. Panth is clear that mild darkening is nothing unusual and is seen in most people to some degree. However, once the skin in the underarm area thickens and the colour becomes more than three shades darker than the surrounding skin, it shouldn't be ignored. At that stage, proper care and, if needed, a doctor's evaluation become important rather than optional.
Steps that can help reduce underarm darkening
Manage your weight: If the darkening is linked to excess weight and the resulting skin friction, working on weight control is the first step, since it naturally reduces the rubbing that triggers pigmentation.
Keep the skin moisturised: Moisturising the underarm skin regularly keeps it soft and cuts down on dryness and irritation, both of which can otherwise worsen the discolouration.
Avoid unnecessary friction: Skip very tight clothing and pick fabrics that cause less rubbing against the underarm skin, which helps stop the darkening from progressing further.
Use the right cream: Dr. Panth suggests that a treatment cream can be used about once a week when needed, but any medicated cream should only be used after consulting a doctor.
In essence, a slight darkening of the underarms is fairly common and usually not a concern, but once the skin thickens and turns more than three shades darker, understanding the actual cause and starting proper care becomes essential.
