The historical markets of Delhi carry a distinct charm and vibrant energy. The narrow alleys here preserve not only commercial heritage but also culinary traditions that date back decades. If you are looking to relish Bappa's favorite Modak during the Ganesh festival, Shyam Sweets located in Chawri Bazar can be a special destination for you. This shop has been preparing Modaks for nearly 35 years, and with the passage of time, several new varieties have been added to its menu.
A Wide Array of Modak Varieties
Customers visiting Shyam Sweets are greeted with an impressive selection of Modaks. The shop offers rice, multi-grain, cashew, dry fruits, and chocolate-flavored Modaks. Whether you prefer the traditional taste or want to try something modern like chocolate and dry fruit infusions, multiple options are readily available to cater to diverse preferences.
The Popular Seven-Grain Modak
Sweet vendor Ajay Agarwal shared that they begin preparing Modaks every year well ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. Several types of Modaks are sold at the shop, among which the seven-grain Modak is currently witnessing the highest demand. This unique variant is crafted by blending seven different grains together, including lentils, rice, wheat, and gram flour.
Origins Rooted in Mumbai
Shopkeeper Sanjay Agarwal mentioned that before the morning and evening prayers dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Modaks are offered as bhog. He recalled that large-scale celebrations of the Ganesh festival began in Delhi around 20 to 25 years ago. In the early days, he traveled to Maharashtra specifically to learn the craft, bringing back molds and authentic samples from Mumbai before introducing them at his own establishment.
Pricing and Customer Choices
The price of Modaks at the shop depends entirely on the ingredients and the specific variety chosen. Modaks here start at approximately 500 rupees per kilo. The standout feature is that patrons have the complete freedom to select and customize their preferred varieties based on their individual tastes.
