Ragi chocolate sheera is a unique dessert that balances great taste with wholesome nutrition. For those who have a sweet tooth but prefer to steer clear of refined flour and heavy sugar, this dish serves as a wonderful alternative. Ragi, also widely known as finger millet or nachni, is naturally packed with numerous vital nutrients. Infused with a rich chocolate flavor, it appeals to both children and adults alike and can be easily incorporated into a balanced diet. The best part is that this recipe requires very little time and can be effortlessly whipped up in your own kitchen using standard ingredients.
Essential Ingredients
To prepare this delicious and healthy recipe, you will need a few basic items. These include 1 cup of ragi flour, 2 cups of milk, 2 to 3 tablespoons of ghee, 1 to 2 toco powder tablespoons, jaggery powder or sugar according to taste, 2 tablespoons of chopped almonds and cashews, 1 tablespoon of whole nuts, and 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder. All of these ingredients are readily available in most households.
Step 1: Roasting the Ragi Flour
To begin making the ragi chocolate sheera, first heat a heavy-bottomed pan on the stove and add ghee to it. Add the ragi flour and roast it on a low flame while stirring continuously with a spatula. Continue roasting until the raw aroma completely disappears and a pleasant, nutty fragrance begins to emit. Make sure the heat is not too high, otherwise the flour can easily burn and ruin the overall taste.
Step 2: Adding Milk and Mixing
Once the flour is properly roasted, gradually pour in the milk while stirring the mixture constantly to prevent any lumps from forming. If needed, you can also add a little water at this stage. Cook the mixture on a low flame for a few minutes until it starts thickening up nicely.
Step 3: Incorporating Cocoa Powder
When the mixture begins to thicken, add the cocoa powder. Mix it thoroughly so that the rich chocolate flavor blends smoothly throughout the entire sheera, giving it an appealing color and uniform taste.
Step 4: Sweetening the Dish
Now, add jaggery powder or sugar to the mixture according to your personal preference. If you are opting for jaggery, keep the flame low and keep stirring continuously to ensure it incorporates evenly without sticking to the bottom.
Step 5: Final Touches with Dry Fruits
In the final step, add chopped almonds, cashews, raisins, and cardamom powder, mixing everything well. Once the sheera thickens completely and starts leaving the sides of the pan, turn off the heat. Serve the hot ragi chocolate sheera in a bowl, garnished with extra chopped dry fruits before serving, or enjoy it after letting it cool down slightly.
