The potato toffee snack recipe is gaining rapid popularity in homes these days, especially among those who are bored of eating conventional snacks like samosas, pakoras, or cutlets. This snack looks exactly like a toffee from the outside, but it is filled with a spicy and flavorful mashed potato mixture inside. This is precisely why it fascinates children, while adults also become fans of its taste. It does not require much effort or an abundance of ingredients to prepare. If you have boiled potatoes and some flour at home, this crispy snack can be prepared in the kitchen in just a few moments. It is an excellent choice to serve with evening tea, pack in children's school lunchboxes, offer to guests, or even for small weekend parties.

How To Prepare The Dough

To begin this recipe, first take 1 cup of all-purpose flour (maida) in a large bowl. Add half a teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of oil, and mix it well so that the flour is thoroughly coated with the oil. Now, add half a teaspoon of nigella seeds (kalonji) and half a teaspoon of carom seeds (ajwain), as both these ingredients add a wonderful aroma and flavor to the snack. After this, add about one-third cup of water gradually and knead a soft dough. Ensure that the dough is not too stiff, as that can make it difficult to roll out. Once the dough is ready, apply a little oil over it, cover it, and let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes to set.

The Secret To Spicy Stuffing

For the filling inside the snack, take two boiled and mashed potatoes. Add one tablespoon of finely chopped onion, one finely chopped green chili, half a teaspoon of cumin seeds, salt to taste, half a teaspoon of red chili powder, a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder, and half a teaspoon of coriander powder. If you prefer a slightly spicier taste, you can increase the amount of green chilies. Finally, add fresh chopped cilantro and mix all the ingredients thoroughly. This stuffing is the heart of the snack, making it incredibly delicious from the inside.

How To Shape Like A Toffee

Now, take small portions of the prepared dough and roll them out thinly like a roti. After rolling, trim the edges with a knife to create a square shape, and then cut them into smaller, uniform squares. Place a small amount of the potato mixture in the center of each piece. Fold it from both sides and seal the edges firmly so that it takes on the exact shape of a toffee. Ensure you do not overfill the stuffing, as filling it too much can cause the snack to open or break while frying.

Precautions While Frying

Heat oil in a frying pan. Note that the oil should not be too hot, as high heat might burn the outer layer while leaving the dough inside undercooked. Fry these prepared snacks slowly over medium heat. When they turn golden brown and the outer layer becomes completely crispy, remove them and place them on a paper towel. The paper towel absorbs the excess oil. Medium heat ensures the snack stays extra crispy on the outside and cooks perfectly on the inside.

Serving Suggestions

This recipe is an attractive option for children's tiffins because its shape is distinctly different from ordinary snacks. Serve it to guests with green chutney, tomato sauce, or a yogurt dip. If you are health-conscious, you can also use an air fryer or a baking method instead of deep-frying. This recipe, prepared with minimal time and simple ingredients, is spectacular in both flavor and presentation. Once you make this, your family will surely request it repeatedly.

What this means for you

Across India: This recipe offers a restaurant-like experience at home with minimal cost, which can help reduce spending on outside junk food.

In the kitchen: Using leftover or readily available boiled potatoes and flour, this quick-to-prepare snack solves the problem of daily kids' lunchbox planning.

How to prevent the stuffing from coming out?
