Hyderabad is globally renowned for its royal culinary heritage, and a unique traditional delicacy is currently drawing major crowds in the old quarters of the city. Food enthusiasts around the historic Charminar markets are eagerly trying a special and nutritious dessert prepared from dried fruits. Due to its warming nature and powerful health benefits, locals affectionately call it jawani janeman halwa, a sweet treat known for energizing and strengthening the body from within.
The most striking feature of this royal confection is the complete absence of refined sugar, jaggery, or sugar syrups in its preparation. The natural sweetness of the dish comes entirely from high-grade figs and seedless dates. Pine nuts, figs, dates, and various dry fruits are packed with iron, calcium, fiber, and antioxidants. This special halwa helps combat physical fatigue, work stress, sluggishness, and joint pain while providing an instant boost of natural energy and stamina.
Required Ingredients for the Halwa
Preparing this strength-boosting and flavorful sweet requires premium ingredients. The recipe utilizes high-quality figs, seedless dates, pine nuts, chopped almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, poppy seeds, pure desi ghee, green cardamom powder, and nutmeg powder. All these components combine to make the halwa not only delicious but also exceptionally beneficial for overall health and wellness.
Traditional and Simple Cooking Method
To create this health-focused sweet, the figs and seedless dates are first soaked in warm water for three to four hours to soften them, after which they are ground into a thick paste. Next, a heavy-bottomed pan is used to heat pure desi ghee, where chopped almonds, cashews, pistachios, and walnuts are lightly roasted until golden and set aside, followed by a similar light roasting of poppy seeds.
The pan is then replenished with a little more desi ghee to cook the fig and date paste over low heat. The mixture is stirred continuously until all the moisture evaporates, the color turns a deep reddish-brown, and the sides begin releasing ghee. Once the paste is thoroughly roasted, the previously fried dry nuts, poppy seeds, cardamom powder, a pinch of nutmeg powder, and whole pine nuts are folded in. The mixture is simmered on low heat for another five minutes. This nutritious halwa is available at prominent shops in Hyderabad for 1200 rupees per kilogram.
