You may already have a favorite ecosystem based on whether you use an Apple or Android phone, or perhaps Amazon's Alexa, given the vast fleet of speakers the company has launched since the 2014 arrival of the first Amazon Echo. While Amazon frequently releases multiple new models every year, Google and Apple maintain much narrower offerings. However, Google recently launched the new Google Home Speaker, marking its first smart speaker release in years.
Evaluating the Top Ecosystems
After testing nearly every smart speaker released over the past decade, several standout options emerge to fit various user needs. As of September 2026, notable updates include increased prices across several of Amazon's Echo devices, while the Google Nest Hub Max remains temporarily out of stock online.
Google Home Speaker and Gemini Integration
Google's latest smart speaker, the Google Home Speaker, combines great features from previous hardware. While sharing a name with the original 2016 Google speaker, its form factor resembles the Apple HomePod Mini, complete with tap controls and fun colors reminiscent of the older Google Nest Mini. Like most of Google's current hardware lineup, aside from the Pixel Tablet, it utilizes Google Gemini as the default voice assistant instead of Google Assistant.
Gemini offers an impressively human-like conversational experience, though responses can occasionally run long. It outperforms peer assistants by accurately managing personal schedules and verifying artist preferences for songs with multiple cover versions. While Gemini for Home is free, advanced capabilities require paid subscriptions under the rebranded Google Home Premium tiers, which range from the Standard plan at $10 per month to the Advanced plan at $20 per month.
Amazon Echo Speakers and Recent Price Hikes
Amazon's Echo line remains ubiquitous in smart homes, featuring everything from puck-shaped legacy devices like the Echo Dot to newer releases. However, utilizing Amazon's advanced AI-powered voice assistant, Alexa+, requires an active Amazon Prime membership or a standalone subscription fee of $20 per month.
In late August, Amazon implemented price increases across multiple hardware categories due to rising component costs for memory and storage. The Echo Dot Max rose by $20 to $120, while the fifth-generation Echo Dot increased from $50 to $80. Other affected models include the second-generation Echo Spot at $110 and the fourth-generation Echo Show 8 at $200.
Smart Displays and Apple Options
For users seeking visual capabilities such as recipe browsing or video streaming, smart displays like the Amazon Echo Show 11 and Echo Show 8 provide robust alternatives, though they frequently display interface clutter and promotional ads. Meanwhile, Apple users face more limited choices. While the full-size HomePod received mixed reviews for its audio profile, the smaller Apple HomePod Mini serves as a convenient and cost-effective hub for Apple HomeKit users, though its retail price recently increased to $129 following Apple's broader price adjustments.
