Audio streaming service Spotify has officially launched a specialized running mode designed to align music playback directly with a runner's physical cadence and workout structure. Moving beyond traditional randomized playlist shuffling, this new feature constructs customized audio sessions matched to specific training phases, user preferences, and target beats per minute (BPM). By organizing runs into distinct segments—warmup, effort intervals, recovery, and cooldown—the mode provides an experience modeled after coached running programs, layering instructional voice guidance directly over the music track.
Accessing the Fitness Hub and Preset Configurations
The new running feature is currently restricted to paid Spotify Premium subscribers. Users can access the functionality by searching for fitness within the mobile application, which navigates directly to the designated Fitness Hub where the running mode occupies the top position. Within this menu, runners can choose from 25 pre-configured workout presets or manually build a custom session from scratch.
When configuring a run, the system prompts selection across five core workout types: Just Run, Easy Runs, Interval, Pyramid, and Long and Advanced. Following workout selection, users choose a primary music genre from an initial roster that includes pop, hip-hop, EDM, rock, and R&B.
Customization Features, Discovery Controls, and Generation Time
Advanced refinement settings allow users to tailor workout duration and audio parameters. Selecting specific modes, such as the Pyramid option, presents a visual graphic outlining the intensity curve across the session's duration. At this stage, expanded genre options become available, adding house, Latin, classical, and country to the selection pool.
A built-in Discovery Slider allows users to dictate the ratio of familiar to new music; setting the slider to 75% forces the algorithm to select mostly unfamiliar tracks. Additional options include toggling an audio coach, setting a specific target BPM (such as 180 BPM), and enabling a setting designed to adjust song playback speed to match target cadence precisely. Once settings are finalized, Spotify takes approximately two full minutes to generate the custom playlist. The resulting playlist then offers options for smart reordering, manual track additions, or further parameter adjustments. During testing of a 35-minute Pyramid Rock Run preset, the 75% new music distribution performed accurately.
Audio Coaching Functionality and In-Run Metrics
The integrated coaching feature operates similarly to established running applications like Nike Run Club, offering periodic form corrections and pacing reminders. An automated voice announces each upcoming song title and delivers contextual advice aligned with the music style and effort level. For example, during a hip-hop sequence, the system issues cues to loosen stride posture, unclench hands, and lower shoulders. During high-intensity segments of a rock playlist, the coach prompts the runner to maintain a snappy cadence without forcing the movement.
While these voice prompts are pre-programmed based on selected workout criteria rather than responding to real-time biometric sensors, they serve as effective reminders to regulate effort. When evaluating the tempo-matching capability using the song Misery Business by Paramore, verification via a Garmin Forerunner 970 smartwatch confirmed a precise running cadence of 180 BPM.
Pacing Progression and Cooldown Dynamics
The pacing logic scales track tempo according to the workout phase. In a measured test run, the playlist initiated at a baseline tempo of 133 BPM, gradually ascending to a peak intensity of 180 BPM. However, the automated sequence encountered a pacing anomaly during the cooldown phase, where a track rated at 210 BPM was queued during a recovery segment.
Despite occasional track placement anomalies during recovery periods, the feature functions as a practical metronome tool for endurance runners aiming to refine internal pacing awareness and rhythm ahead of race events.
